Any Icelanders here? Maybe you could shed some light on your culture

...because I'm confused, now, and really disillusioned. Here, I always had this impression that Icelanders were wholesome, non-violent, fully literate people, with social equality, full employment, healthcare coverage including dental care, psychological counseling... And yet, in this film, there are extortion rackets and gangsters - some of them with missing or rotten teeth... How is that possible?

It's a movie, it's not supposed to portray Iceland or its people in a realistic manner. Do people really think movies portray worlds in a realistic manner?

reply

How is that possible?
I kind of agree with the sentiment of your post. The country after all, only has a small population, yet here half of them would appear to be directly involved with the underworld. It is "just" a movie, but I would have liked a little more of an Icelandic feel to it. The way it is filmed, discount the language and it could have been made just about anywhere.🐭

"Half of them"? You do know there are more than 20 people living in Iceland, correct?

You don't obviously understand the term figurative language. Correct?🐭

reply

I do, and of course I know you weren't being literal, but I was taking your point literally to show how absurdly exaggerated it was. There was like 10 Icelanders in this movie that were mixed up in this activity. To refer to ten guys as representing half a population of ~300,000 is ridiculous even when taken in the most figurative sense.

Rubbish! Just the opposite applied which is the point of the post. Virtually all the characters were mixed up in the activities in some way. You need to look at the movie again.🐭

OK, yes, but that's still only like 10 people. My point stands.

reply

OK, yes, ...
No, your point can't stand if you are agreeing with me. I was clearly only ever speaking figuratively, not literally.🐭

To cyenne: I'm not an Icelander so please forgive me for speaking out of turn, but I think the response to this is fairly common sense. Just because the country is one of the most peaceful places on Earth and has a high standard of living with good social services with a generally well-educated and well-behaved population, you can never make such sweeping generalizations as you did. They may be far fewer in number than most countries, and it was probably exaggerated a bit for the film, but Iceland does have violent, underworld types just like anywhere else (not to mention people with missing or rotten teeth). How is that possible? Because they're imperfect human beings just like everyone else on Earth.
