T.I.F.F

Today, I had the pleasure (?) of seeing this film at the Toronto International Film Festival. I don't quite know what to make of it yet...

Aesthetically, it's flawless. The cinematography, angles, and lighting are impeccable, and it was beautiful to watch.

The downside? It draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagged. And dragged. And dragged. The story had little substance, and while it was layered with symbolism, even THAT wasn't enough to alleviate the tedium of the painful DRAGGING.

Would I watch it again? Probably not. Was it worth watching one time through? Definitely. Just my humble opinion.

saw it today at paramount as well.
agree with you that it is very slow and dragged.

However, the performances were good and the film was GORGEOUSLY shot.

Sounds great. I'm looking forward to seeing it at VIFF (Vancouver film festival).

GREAT!

I have enjoyed reading the reviews of this film, so far.

I am going to go and see this film, too.

Thanks for the heads-ups.

I completely agree with O.P. Especially the third act is really dragged out too long (well, the whole second / third act actually, after the dad gets out from prison) - but yes, the cinematography is beautiful, but good cinematography can only help a mediocre story so much.. :p

I saw this film, once. I thought the pacing added power to the film.

It made up for the fact that much was (purposefully) not revealed in the plot.

I loved the manner in which the film was shot, as well.

...and draaaggggeeeed.

The cinematography was nice, but unfortunately my TV isn't quite the quality of a theater. And, although beautifully filmed, not enough to hold my attention through the entire running time of the movie. Gah. One of the few movies that I was actually wishing for the end, just so I could stop watching (I finish what I start).

It started off nice. And I think there was a good story under all that slow. But the pace was just too overwhelming.

Unfortunate. Still the first Ceylan movie I've seen, and I'd still like to see his others.

Agreed, it was quite slow.

I don't mind the movie's subtlety, nor its leisurely, image-driven structure, but IMO there just wasn't enough substance overall.

I agree with the OP about its aesthetics, but such an approach is generally more applicable to a more artistic subject matter than a somewhat dysfunctional family clinging to a lower-middle-class status.
