Yes, it's slow. So what?

It' s the biggest cliché on comments that this film is so slow. This film is not a pop-corn movie; you must think and feel while watching it.
Besides, it has a good storyline and storytelling is brilliant. Visuality is on top, and very well acted.
If you call yourself as a cinephile (cinema-lover), you can't get bored on this film while watching it; because it has too much things to get.

It's a good movie indeed.....if you have drank 5 cups of coffee before entering the theatre. Otherwise, there are big odds that you're gonna get some sleep during the movie.

reply

Even ,if you would drink more than 5 cups coffee,I do not think it would work for you.It is a very good film with very good visuality and very well acted...

reply

I agree, the movie was good, with good acting and visuality......but it just makes you wanna sleep....

reply

LOL! This one is like a Transformers movie compared to Ceylan's follow-up film to this, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.

reply

Agreed with OP.

I personaly liked this film.

ps:

a classic nuri bilge ceylan line....

10/9

Cannot agree more. Excellent, well-made movie

I didn't think it was slow or boring - it was very interesting and a joy to look at, even if it was rather depressing. I was way more bored during this season's favorites - Slumdog Millionaire and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

reply

It was slow-paced, but that is not what bothered me. I did not like the licentious little boy who masturbated into the kefir container. I did not understand the relevance.

reply

When/where in the movie did this happen? I missed it entirely.

reply

I do not think there is such a scene (masturbation) in the movie. The little boy is apparently Ismail's deceased brother ,and Ismail visualizes him as if in a dream and that scene does not give suggestion of such an act

It's an amazing film. Slow. Where do these people have to go?
They are in a hurry to eat some more food?

If you think this film is too slow and you will fall asleep, or if you need 5 cups of coffee or some sh!t, then it's most likel that you watch too many Hollywood films. Why bother seeing this if you sound like you will 'suffer' from drowsiness? Go watch your fast action flicks or Hollywood genre films that are so fast paced.

Movies like Three Monkeys is about appreciating the structure of the shots and visuality, and how the chaos slowly unveils itself. If you don't have the patience or mindset to appreciate such splendid filmmaking, then I don't understand what you are doing in this film thread.

This is the reason why I hate the so called "cinephiles", this movie has the worst pace in the cinema history, when you need to show a man sleeping in slowmotion you have very strong problems with you story. And no, I am not a fat american that love Transformers or whatever, you need to see a lot more movies to learn what "storytelling" or "visuality" means.

reply

agreed, "cinephiles" sometimes like to throw that word around smugly. the movie would be interesting if they actually built up the plot or characters, or if they turned it into a short by shortening or deleting the scenes of the characters standing/sitting/lying down.

i also found it annoying how every single trivial sound was made to be extremely loud, presumably for emphasis. especially when the clock was loudly ticking and then stopped ticking so the phone could loudly ring. i guess "cinephiles" like to hear sand artificially crunching under shoes that sound like tap shoes on marble when a character is wearing sneakers on asphalt as much as they like hear a man's breath rustling his nose hairs.
