the damp, dead brother

I take it that the dripping, out of focus kid who appears to Ismail when he is lying down is the dead brother whose grave he and his father visit later on. Could somebody comment on his significance in that scene and to the plot overall? There is precious little explicit mention of him to guide us.

I just saw the film and entered this site for that very reason: I think it is important to get a hint of the brother´s death. It seems it was some sort of accident but why is it the mother the only one who doesn´t seem to remember him?

Interesting question possibly to be asked in conjunction with the inferred why did the wife not visit the husband in prison, nor pick him up? For whatever reasons I think it's suggested she wanted a different/better life for herself and didn't want to be constrained by the chains of past hurts and disappointments.
