A Sincere Question

I recently watched Pariah and enjoyed it. I have a question about AGs. Are they considered the same as transsexuals in the gay community? If one is a lesbian, what is the interest in dating a woman who straps on a penis?

reply

An AG is not a transsexual. It's like being butch in a more modern context more common in Black and Latino Communities. I gave a more in depth answer on the "What is AG?" thread if you're interested.

As to why some Lesbians date masculine women there is no single answer. Everyone has there thing.

Hypotheses (just guessing):
1) Basic attraction (why? why is anyone attracted to someone you just are), she's like that aesthetic
2) Masculine Women are still women, and women tend to understand women better than men (Masculine Women are not Men)
3) Personality (individual person to person basis)
4) The expectation of a diametric relationship, meaning she may feel someone should have to be the "man" in the relationship even if she's not attracted to men at all. During the early history of more open homosexuality in America there was a strong pressure on lesbians by the greater lesbian community to have butch-femme relationships even if that might be something a lesbian might not be into. Lesbians who broke from this expectation were not thought well of by their fellow lesbians. However I believe this stems from the fact most households of that time period had very polar views of men and women and since most people come from heterosexual households they emulate this dynamic. Modern lesbians tend to be more progressive about gender relationships because there are Studs who date Studs and Fems who date fems. However I suspect studs and fems who don't come from as progressive households/communities probably still do this for the same reason previous butches and femmes did.
5) There are Women who Date Women who may not be exclusively interested in women so for them this might be the best of both worlds.

*FTMs (Female to Male transsexuals), I do believe there are probably some studs who would be better classified as pre-op FTMs. These are the ones more likely to:
1) "pack", wear a strap-on
2) wrap their breasts
3) avoid any feminine attire like the plague

However FTMs are rare. The majority of transsexuals are MTF (male to female).

Women who date FTMs see their partner as "male".
Women who date studs see their partner as female.

*A lot of women enjoy penetration but that in of itself doesn't make you straight. There are men who enjoy it too but have zero interest in male partner. The myriad of human fetishes is extensive so why wouldn't someone like one of the most common practices in their daily or occasional sexual routines?

Enjoying a particular sensation or appearance doesn't determine your sexuality.
If you go online there are studs that get hit on by gay and straight men. The gay males think they see a cute guy, does that make them straight? The straight guy sees a female in baggy pants and is attracted to her does that make him gay or just another guy hitting on an uninterested woman?

Last but not least don't forget a partner is more than the sum of their parts. How you treat someone and make them feel is far more important.

*Check out youtube and look up "Why do femmes date studs?" Them they can tell you in their own words without speculation.

Not sure your sexual orientation or what "community" you find yourself most identifying with, but speaking as a lesbian that's relatively active in LGBT rights, social aspects, etc. I feel like you nailed it in answering this question. Thanks for representing LGBT community (*in MY opinion*) in a very informative and gentle light!
