THIS is the movie we should be guilting people into seeing.

Not "Red Tails".

I thought this movie was very well done, despite its somewhat conventional plot outline (that said conventional plot outline is used as the foundation for a story set in a less-than-conventional world with less-than-conventional characters makes up for it somewhat). The performances, direction, and cinematography are all excellent, and make for an enveloping, deeply involving picture.

I gave it an 8/10.

I agree. Even though "Red Tails" has a mostly black cast, it's still your typical American patriotic "us versus them" movie.

I agree 100%! Although, I still haven't seen Red Tails, I started a thread on its message board addressing this very subject. Why are black people rushing out to see that movie, simply to prove Hollywood wrong? I'd rather support a film that's actually good. Not to mention the fact that everyone involved with this film is black, not just the cast. Anyway, I gave it 9/10, which is a tie for my highest rated film of 2011. I thought it was superb on all fronts.

I saw "Pariah" on a Saturday night and "Red Tails" the next day, on a Sunday afternoon.

Very. bad. idea.

It was like going to a big concert by a tone-deaf pop singer after having left a local show by a phenomenally talented vocalist the night before.

I wish there was a place where we didn't have to guilt people into seeing either one. Both present two very different stories, and the only similarity are the actors skin colors.

I have not seen Red Tails, because as a avid movie watcher, the subject matter does nothing for me. I couldn't give a damn if they were white, black, asian or hispanic. I skipped Spike Lee's Miracle at St. Anna too.

However, I appreciate that in theaters we as a people can have more than just Tyler Perry's comedies out there. It's nice to see a full black cast outside of just a few sprinkles. Diversity is always nice for there are probably people who feel the opposite of me and have no interest in Pariah, but live war films.

Overall, we shouldn't have to guilt or plead for a person to see one movie or another. What matters is that more quality ones are made approaching subject matters that we don't see often. Both Red Tails and Pariah present a point of view often unspoken and should be applauded for that. Even if one is treated like a action movie and the other a drama. At least they exist.

Both movies were made for the same reason - to send the message, "Don't pretend I don't exist and don't attempt to rob me of my dignity. What I do or have done in this world matters. I matter."

I agree. Red Tails seems more like a "LOOK AT WHAT BLACK PEOPLE DID! They contributed to history and America!" And...that's been done SO many times before it's just overkill. But this film? This was just a movie about a young woman who happened to be black and live in the black community dealing with issues many gay teens face. I really enjoyed it.

LOL it's been done "so many times" yet black people who have contributed to history outside of slavery and the CRM aren't mentioned in history classes.

I don't get why people like to uplift one movie of some sort of similarity, and put down another.. Y'all ain't it no favors.. Nobody should be guilt into seeing anything really..
