Was Helen Mirren a prostitute?

Honestly, there were some things she said that made me think so. It wasn't clear to me. But then I'm usually not clear on these types of things.

No. She was Rose's boss at the tearoom.

"Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"

reply

I took it that she was either an ex-prostitute or an ex-madam, probably the later.

reply

I think you are right, I got the feeling from some of her comments. It was implied more than spelled out for the audience, but she had certainly seen the darker side of life and she was the kind of woman attracted to the criminal element.

reply

Lol. NO. She was not, nor had she ever been, a prostitute in the novel. And I don't see any reason to believe that the movie changed that, nor any reason that the filmmakers might have had to do that. She was a free-and-easy type with her gentlemen friends, but she wasn't a hooker.

I wonder about the age of the posters on this thread. They seem to have lived sheltered lives. She was a widow in a high-crime, blue-collar neighborhood, and she wasn't young, but of course she had probably seen a lot of life.
When you get to be her age you'll know for yourself.

I'm just struck by the sexism implicit in the original question. She had seen the rough side of life, so she was a prostitute? Was Corkery then a pimp?

Have you guys ever even SEEN a real prostitute?

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

reply

Of course she was a prostitute! All prostitutes also owned tea rooms in 1964! lol

reply

I thought the port and lemon was supposed to give the impression that maybe at one time she had been a prostitute.
