Don't Expect the Beatles

When one mentions Liverpool, who doesn't think of the Beatles? If you rent this movie expecting them to be mentioned or their influence on Liverpool explored, think again. The director does use footage of them briefly, but his contempt for them and their impact in Liverpool is all too apparent.

What I found ironic was his use of The Hollies "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" song during the Korean War footage, considering that the Hollies are a pop band from Manchester. Go figure.

I have to agree. Taking a swipe at the Beatles is foolish, futile, and just makes him (and some of the movie) look petty. Fine, you don't like the Beatles, great. You're entitled to not like the Beatles and prefer Mahler. I can understand how someone from Liverpool might be sick and tired of the inevitable free association: Liverpool => Beatles. I get it. Then just leave them out.

Don't get me wrong; I'm a huge Beatles fan, but I do not see contempt for them in this film. Much of the film is about pre-Beatles Liverpool. I think The Beatles were more influenced by Liverpool than Liverpool by The Beatles. As for choice of music, there's a lot more goes into selection than the popularity of the music, including copyright, and not the least of which is the theme intended.
