What was the folk-style song and who perfomed it? I just remember only words "...smell the spring...in the southern wind" or similar...

The performance in the film was by The Spinners, but the song has been covered many other times, perhaps most memorably by The Pogues. It was written by Ewan MacColl about his home town of Salford, which is part of Greater Manchester and therefore not too far from Liverpool.
