how did he explain to his family his absence during the time he was living at Mia's?

I think he and hus wife were fighting, toward the beginning of the movie he said he had to leave because of family troubles, when he came back and said he was staying a while Mia teasingly asked him if his mum kicked him out and he said year something like that.
