This show sucks...

I am incredibly disappointed with this show. I loved AD and was pinning my hopes and dreams on this thing. That's probably a little unfair, but it was just not good. I did not like it at all. The jokes didn't land, the animation was not compelling. It was just bad. Any thoughts?

I loved it but you're probably here to bash so talk to everyone else.

reply

You've got a good point there. I didn't like the show, but I didn't mean to bash. Just stating my opinion. I don't like reading thoughtless angry rants from people either.

The expectation and the disappointed that followed was the hardest part for me. I really loved King of the Hill and wish they would bring Futurama back too. I think FOX should think twice about cancelling a Sunday night show until they've got a good replacement.

I agree it was just horrible

reply

Thirded, it was crap. I would ask for my 30 minutes back, but I'd just waste them too. lol

reply

Yea this show did suck suck suck Fox is killing the good shows and putting on crap they cancelled King Of The Hill for this?

reply

I expected this to be bad, but I watched it anyway because I love everyone who worked on this and Arrested Development is probably the best comedy that I've ever seen. I expected this to be bad, but not THIS bad. I did not laugh once the whole show. I'm going to give it another chance, but I'm ready to be disappointed. But, what did expect out of a show that was based off a failed show that was based off another failed show?

reply

I too was disappointed. Such potential (the talent involved). Ah well, I can catch up on my movies.

Giddy: Dig the signature. Loved Wonderfalls. I hope Bryan Fuller does another show (I know he's on Heroes).

reply

I tuned in because of the names involved. With good writing, the show actually would have rocked. This was disgusting. I feel sorry for the actors.

reply

Wow, this show has so much talent, yet was just unfunny. I am actually looking forward to the Cleveland show after watching this!!

They need to renew King of the Hill and Futurama and stop with the garbage that they try to sandwich between The Simpson's and Family Guy!!!

reply

I thought it was better than I expected.

It was definitely no Arrested Development, but it had a certain Clone High feel to it.

I maintain a wait and see attitude on this one.

I didn't know anything about it until I saw that it was a new animated thing on after the Simpsons. I like animation but I was really disappointed with this waste of time/piece of poop. It feels like the similarly draggy-dull "Mission Hill" - must be the same author or animation company and is equally dreary and un-funny.

The voice talent cannot be denied (that's where the first resemblance to "Mission Hill" was noticeable) but they can only do so much with a boring, dull, un-funny script. Having a vigilante teacher run around barefoot WITH a baby in constant tow (and the nonspeaking baby is smarter than she is) - whoever thought that would be funny? It's beyond stupid.

Teachers are a frequent barb of humor 'cos most of us have been in a school at one time or another but I didn't even crack a smile. I did roll my eyes often until I finally decided that nothing was better than this something. Even the commercials airing during that time frame were more intriguing that this.

I liked Mission Hill, but it had substance and thought put into it. MH was created by Bill Oakley & Josh Weinstein. SD,SU was created by--and I hate to admit this--Arrested Development creator Mitchell Hurwitz.

reply

Ha, that IS funny (looking forward to the Cleveland show!), you actually made me laugh out loud - which SDSU did not. Not even one chuckle. Painful even.

Of course "Cleveland" is going to suck in a different way. It will be another diluted watery bowl of "MacFarlane" soup. Family Guy was funny, but he ran out of fresh ideas. American Dad is NOT funnier than Family Guy, no matter what the popular opinion here is. AD has moments of humor where you can see where the FG writers have contributed some energy, but when they leave the room, or just get tired, it shows.

Cleveland will stretch this crew even thinner, and probably add a bunch of the current unfunny "hipster comic" crowd as guests/writers to make it even worse. (For reference: Dane Cook, Seth Rogan, ANY current SNL performer, Tim and Eric, etc.)

It's a shame that MOST of the casts.writers of Monty Python, Kids in the Hall, SCTV, the original Tracy Ullman and Ben Stiller shows, and even a lot of the stars of the golden years of comedy (Burnett, VanDyke, Martin (Steve), Sid Caesar, for God's sake)are still around.

Any TWO of the writers from any of those shows could make a brilliantly funny animated show TODAY. Why do they produce the crap like SDSU? Why?

It's called an opinion. You are free to form your own as well. If you don't have one, then why bother writing anything here?

reply

Worst show ever, cancel it already!

reply

@rockmail
That was not a opinion. The way you said it was like it was a fact and that everyone who thinks otherwise is wrong. I know plenty of people who prefer american dad over family guy including myself.

reply

The pilot for animated shows always suck. Remember the pilot for Family Guy, American Dad, King of the Hill, and The Simpsons? They all sucked. I'll give this show three more episodes before to either thoroughly disappoint me or surprisingly entertain me.

reply

On the contrary, I thought Family Guy had potential when I first watched the pilot, and it did not cause a "let's turn this *beep* off" type of reaction like Sit down, Shut up did. I LOVE Arrested Development and to see Mitchell Hurwitz's name on this horrible piece of television made me sick. I feel bad for Bateman and Arnett as well. What were they all thinking here? Not even one chuckle came out of this. Horrible. Put some energy towards the AD movie instead, please.

Yup. Not only is it unfunny, but it looks ugly. Nothing going for it.

reply

It's really unfortunate that this show didn't get a chance in a normal timeslot that people would watch it. The most recent (and sadly the final) episodes have gotten very good. The writing is brilliant with broad jokes and very subtle humor and wordplay. Sure it's obscure. Sure it's weird. But so was Arrested Development. This show deserves another chance. The animation is great. Mixing live and animated stuff. (The imaginary cat is hysterical) I truly hope that Comedy Central picks this up. I would watch this show if I had to choose between it and the poor shock-and-awe "comedy" that Family Guy has been putting on lately.

reply

Puddle-a-slush I totally agree, I've been DVRing this series since it started and the newer episodes are all really fun and sharp.

It's a shame Fox screwed up with this, but hopefully Comedy Central or Adult Swim will pick it up.

If people gave the show a chance (more than 4 episodes) they would probably grow to like it.

I've also come to realize that this and many other shows with subtle or obscure jokes don't do well in mainstream (Mystery Science I'm lookin at you) and that is fine, not everything is for everyone as long as the fans are given an opportunity to find/enjoy episodes then it's all good!

"We've got movie sign!"

reply

I disagree. I stumbled onto this show by coincidence and had no idea what to expect, and I loved it. It was a pleassant surprise in the midst of all the crap on tv these days

reply

wow. it's interesting to see how many people hate this show. The one episode I saw I thought was really clever and silly. I came to these boards expecting a bunch of people who also like this show only to find that everyone hates it. This is very surprising.

Champagne for my real friends, real pain for my sham friends.

reply

You will find that most IMDB boards are quite negative and are not thankful for quality entertainment :(

reply

I'm not pushing people over to get to it. But I was pleasantly surprised that it did in fact amuse me.

I somehow completely missed this show. I was looking up mitch hurwitz here on imdb the other night and saw this show, saw the actors and was freaking out. another possible arrested development. Then I realized it was the same show comedy central had shown previews of that I blew off as another dumb comedy central broad comedy, like drawn together.
I got this rush of disappointment but thought it was worth a shot anyway. So I checked it out and at first I didn't like it, but there was a few gems in the show I watched. and actually, even though I don't like the art style and I thought some of the jokes missed, I thought it was pretty funny and clever in spots.

It definitely has that cheesy, crude comedy central edge to it (even if it started as a fox show), and that knocks it down a few notches in my eyes from something like arrested development, but hurwitz style and quality of humor is totally visible in there if you care to look. And to me a lot of the wordplay in it was clever, as opposed to the lazy wordplay of the aforementioned drawn together. and a few of the jokes really hit.

I've seen 2 episodes now, and it's enough for me to be able to say I like it, but I wouldn't argue with someone that said it has it's fair share of stupid bits in it, and I'd agree if someone made the point that something is missing that would make the show especially memorable or worthy of all the talent involved. I can't help but think the whole time how I wish it was live action.
This to me is a case where for me the cartoon style actually tends to take away from the comedy, where to a show like family guy or south park, the animation will often add to the comedy or even be the focal point of comedy for bits in the show.

I'd say this show is almost there, if only it had a funnier animation style that took advantage and complimented the talented writers and actors who are (or were) working on it. It might be worth giving it a chance to grow though. It might become something great. Although with that animation, at least for me, I not so sure.
overall I suggest giving it a chance if you like hurwitz style of comedy, just take it for what it is and try not to compare it to arrested development and you might enjoy it.
