People who find this funny must be..

Too easily entertained. The entire movie, ranging from the plot to the characters are simply dumb and over the top. None of the characters were likable at all. Lou was so annoying throughout the entire movie, with over the top cursing and lame dialogue. Actually, the entire movie consisted of lame dialogue and jokes dry as a desert. I'm actually surprised this movie is so highly rated.

And this is called sharing an opinion, which means I'm not a troll. Anyways, anyone else agree with me?

reply

I have to agree with you toroto92 the movie was pretty lame. I laughed maybe once or twice. The whole movie was disappointing. It had potential but it was poorly written and executed.

"Hot Tub Time Machine" (HTTM), was an amalgamation of many different movies (Every one of them was better than this (Except a certain one which I save for last)). Obviously you think of "Timecop" (The scene at the end, with Cusack and Lizzy Caplan (April) might as well have been Jean-Claude Van Damme and Mia Sara. Of course, unlike "Timecop" you have no idea how Adam & April hooked up again. That problem was even dealt with better in a KIDS movie called "SuzieQ" from 1996), "Red Dawn", and "Back To The Future", but "The Final Countdown" (A movie from 1980 with "Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen), "Animal House" and "Say Anything" (John Cusack was essentially playing Lloyd Dobler 20 years later). The problems with the movie, is it was not funny. The scene with the keys and the dog's butt was the funniest in the movie. As for the squirrel, it did nothing for the movie (Unlike say the gopher in "Caddyshack" (Another movie they ripped off)). The biggest problem, believe it or not, was the editing. I mentioned the last scene with Adam and April (By the way, where was April when they all sat down as "Family". You would think his wife would be there?). Scenes of Lizzy Caplan, along with a few others, must have ended up on the cutting room floor. Finally, the concept of changing your life for the better, by magic or fate, was handled much better in "13 Going On 30" (That film is "Animal House" compared to HTTM). There is only one character that I liked, or even cared about, and that was Nick Webber (Craig Robinson). Because of him, I give a very generous 1 star. Because otherwise this film would fall right into a list of all-time bad films such as "The Adventures Of Pluto Nash" or a horrible film they actually referred to in this movie called "A Sound Of Thunder" (The scene where they talked about the butterfly in time, and compared to the Russian "Red Bull"... It was from that picture (One of the biggest box office flops in history))

reply

April was there, she was just half-hidden. And the butterfly was a direct, stated reference to "The Butterfly Effect" (one of two Ashton Kutcher references) not "A Sound of Thunder". And I feel really kind of stupid correcting minor mistakes in an otherwise sound criticism of a movie which wasted two hours of my life, but since I've just watched it and the horror is still fresh in my mind, I felt the need to do so. Gods I'm pathetic....

reply

They did reference "The Butterfly Effect" movie, but they weren't just talking about that. They were also talking about the actual Butterfly Effect, something that the movie of the same name and the short story "A Sound of Thunder" are based around. In "A Sound of Thunder", a group of men travel back to prehistoric times and one of the characters steps on a butterfly. When they return to the future, the consequenses of this action are evident in changes in the English language and the outcome of a major election. So really they were referencing "A Sound of Thunder", because that story is most likely where the theory got it's name.

reply

Except that they were referencing 'The Butterfly Effect' not 'A Sound of Thunder'. There are consequences every time Ashton Kutcher's character changes the past with the intention to make the future better. The actual concept was conceived about sixty years before the Ray Bradbury short story, possibly even longer without actual documentation.

I don't see any similarity in the characters other than the fact they both have John Cusack's face. Lloyd Dobler was a genuinely nice guy with a passion for kickboxing and the girl of his dreams, Adam was kind of a d-bag who seemed to have no passion except for maybe his suitcase of drugs, and dumped the girl of his dreams (or so he thought) using the stalest line in the book.

reply

I was reminded of Better Off Dead, but that was only because of the skiing.

reply

You have a really good memory and you are 100% correct about Hot Tub being a rip off of half the old movies ever made. I am very tired of every movie being released these days trying to out-F bomb the last. It's like some teen who just discovers his mouth can say 4 letter words and overusing all of the ones in and out of the dictionary. The only thing missing from this was a farting scene.

reply

Fcking nerd, get yourself a bird you boring kunt.

He moves his lips when he reads. What does that tell you about him.

reply

I love the way youve just listed everything that you have seen in other films.
ooh i saw a squirrel

reply

Everyone has their opinion. I laughed many times. Crispin Glover was really funny, to me at least. Oh well, everyone is different!

reply

you nailed it... i was really hoping for something solid considering the excellent cast. the best part of the entire film was Rob Corddry in the closing credits as part of a motley crue video.

reply

It's entertaining. Seriously. So, because you don't find something particularly funny that must mean you have a superior sense of humor and everyone else is just easily entertained? What a joke. People like you are just miserable to be near. I am not easily entertained and I love this movie.

reply

Yes, that's about it. And for your information, I'm not miserable to be near.

reply

false, you are. I've posted near you and I'm now miserable because of it. This movie was funny, get over it.

reply

Yes I too am more miserable now that he posted.

Now THAT is funny.

reply

jclark says it's funny so it must be.
Actually this movie was a piece of unfunny steaming dog *beep* that I could only tolerate watching 30 minutes of. The bald headed guy was what really killed it for me. Do people actually find him or anything he said in the movie funny?
I am a big fan of sophomoric and juvenile humor - Revenge of the Nerds, Team America for example. Dumb & Dumber is on my top 25 movies of all time, and I was one of the it seems few that actually liked Bad Santa & Grandma's Boy.
I'm curious to know what parts in particular anyone that enjoyed the movie considers hilarious.

reply

I'm 40-something and Hot Tub Time Machine reminded me of the sort of sophomoric comedy that I liked watching with my buddies twenty-five years ago. You know, get the gang together, get some beer and a few movies then kick back and relax with friends.

For a couple of hours I felt like a kid again watching this. The flick was moronic and unbelievable in a few places but I can forgive that if it sets up good physical comedy. The scenes set in the 80's were a fun blast from the past.

No one would ever call this great art, but no one expects it either.

reply

You couldn't be more wrong with your assessment of the movies "Team America" and "Bad Santa". You call "Team America" "juvenile and sophomoric" when it is clearly an ingenious parody of action movies and satire of patriotism. You say you're in the minority of people that liked "Bad Santa" except that movie was widely heralded as being very funny.

This makes your opinion have less impact. Just trying to help you form a cogent argument.

reply

jclark, I have to tell you the name alone made me not want to see this movie. Personally, I think most of the haters felt the same way. Even the actors must have felt the same way. Craig Robinson even looks at the screen and announces the title with disbelief. Most of the hatred comes from the title. But damn, if this isn't a funny movie. You just have to give it a chance, like Joe Dirt. Thank you cable. This movie has a shot yet.

toroto92 it is a shame to generalize like you are doing. It boils down to differing tastes.

I suppose you found "Airplane" lowbrow as well?

You might want to go to the doctor to find your funneh bone, as it seems to be missing.....

reply

Go watch Step Brothers THAT is comedy at its worst this film was a clever and crass send off to the 80's and in that respect it suceeded but hey to each his own.

reply

That maybe so, but you really do need to have the delusional episodes of unqualified superiority checked out.

reply

Well said!! That's what I hate about imdb forums. The people who think their opinion is fact. I found this movie to be funny, if you didn't then you have no sense of humour!! We can all do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

you too are basically stating that your opinion is fact, considering the op wasn't taking shots at those who did like it, only that he was surprised it was rated high, is that not an opinion? Also, this is a discussion board right, not a "I hate you if you don't think the way I do" board.

reply

I was taking the piss(hence the we can all do it), showing that anybody can make it so that their opinion comes across as them saying it is a fact and if someone doesn't agree with it they are wrong.

reply

Actually, he was taking shots. The whole "People who find this movie funny... are too easily entertained" is an insult. It's like saying that we are mindless drones who could understand very little. I'm all for stating an opinion, but at least word it as such.

Thank you DeadPrezGirlie, glad to see I'm not the only one who loved this movie. Just because there isn't some smart humor for all you other over pretentious critics who, I am pretty sure, never have taken the time to appreciate a movie without being overcritical about every little aspect that they didn't like, and then used that aspect to go ahead and call the rest of the world idiots because they actually enjoyed what is truly a good entertaining movie. Believe what you want about the movie, but please, don't act as if your superior to people who did enjoy the simple and right-in-your face humor this movie offered, cause you knoe what, all I see is people who simply need perfection in order to enjoy something, and seriously, thats just sad

reply

Im guessing the 92 in your names is because you were born in 1992 and would explain a lot of why you didn't like this movie.

reply

So that explains it? Because I wasn't alive to experience the eighties, this movie clearly isn't for me? That's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. The jokes are still lame, utterly dry and quite immature, and that certainly has nothing to do with me not experiencing the eigthies, but more with lousy writing.

reply

Wrong. I think if you lived through the 80's it does make the film more enjoyable.

So, you've admitted to being of a superior intelligence to those who do find this film funny? It might be true that you're not miserable to be near, but I'm confident of you being downright abhorrent.

reply

LOL, I lived thru the 80's and caught this on the .99 Cent channel. I want my .99 cents back. Same with me, very lame dialogue. Than God for some Tits now and then because otherwise I would have fallen asleep. Even the 80's was not as bad as this movie was.

reply

Yep I agree with "The Man The Myth"...I'm sure something as obscure as mentioning "Manimal" is going to make me laugh a lot more than someone who doesnt catch it all.

reply

Actually it does explain it as a lot of the jokes make references to various ideas, shows, "things" that happened or existed in the 80s and without living it, you wouldn't understand the references. It would be like someone telling you a joke but saying the punchline in Japanese. The joke is still funny, but you don't get it because you don't understand Japanese.

So yes, you not understanding the jokes in the film has EVERYTHING to do with you not experiencing the 80s, so move along.

reply

Examples please. None of the jokes I heard made any superior reference to the eighties.

reply

How the hell would you even notice? You're not from the eighties.

Dude it's a funny movie i don't know y you come here and expect to be praised for typing your opinion, A lot of us here can look back at the 80's because that was our time, Now this is the time of tight jeans and immature kids like you, i respect your opinions but don't bash everybody else because you didn't find it funny, Most of the jokes you probably didn't understand you obviously have a lot of growing up too do kid.

reply

Well at least he confirmed his age for us. Maybe you should go back to your justin bieber albums and leave movies which talk about a time before Miley Cyrus to the rest of us.

reply

I'm born in '92, so please don't generalize my age bracket. I enjoyed most of this movie - aside from the crude jokes now and again. I neither like Justin Bieber nor Miley Cyrus, but that's all in ones taste.

toroto, most of the jokes went over your head, so yes, you not being born yet definitely makes the movie not for you. That and your lack of sense of humor.

reply

Dude you are taking this movie way too seriously, no wonder you didn't enjoy it.

________________________________________________________________________________

You're just too young and on top of that too stupid to understand. Jokes referencing a time you were not born will obviously not work nor entertain you. As for your other complaints about the film they are obviously irrelevant seeing as you are severely retarded on top of being too young.

Hidyho!

reply

So that explains it? Because I wasn't alive to experience the eighties, this movie clearly isn't for me?

Yep

Utah! Get me two.

reply

There was a lot of jokes/humor and references some in the background, that only worked if you knew what they were referencing and some were so subtle that they could be missed. I loved the obscure "MANIMAL" reference.. I busted out laughing and the woman that watched it with me was born in 79 and she couldnt fig out at all why I was laughing..so yes I do feel that the movie works better for those who remember the 80's well. And it didnt just worked cause they referenced something but it was because it was also funny in how they used it.

reply

Not lousy writing, it's not your taste in writing. Just because you don't find it funny and don't like it, doesn't make it bad, just bad in your opinion.

And the age thing - from the poster above - was just plain distasteful.

I was born in 87 and I loved the movie, had some really clever time travel stuff although:

*SPOILERS*

It was super obvious that Lou would end up as the guys dad after he first spoke with Jacob's mom/Adam's sister.

*ENDSPOILERS*

A lot of the throwback stuff was done really well and the ending was pretty cool for a comedy flick.'

Overall I'd say a solid 3.75/5, great for a modern comedy.

reply

Actually I agree with the op. You are one of those people who think that any one who has a difference of opinion than you is wrong. Well Lets see, I agree with him, so in my mind that makes you wrong. If the guy or gal is only 18, so what, the movie was made for a 18 year old anyways. Saying the f-bomb a thousand times doesn't make a movie funny.

reply

no. it's fine that OP didn't like the movie and didn't find it funny, the problem with it is what OP considered of those of us that did. just as i would find your assumption it was the f-words that made this movie funny for us is a pretty thin statement. i liked it for the references back to the 80's. it's not a great movie, but it was entertaining.

saying you suck and then saying it's just an opinion still means i've insulted you. backing up my statement with an excuse for saying it would be considered pathetic.

--anti-dubber.

reply

I loved this movie, It may be because I don't criticize every little thing about it or it may be because I am easily entertained. Since when is being easily entertained a bad thing.

reply

I have to agree with the OP on that. Besides the awesomeness which is Crispin Glover, the characters were weak, they had so much potential but they struck out on so many good jokes. What pisses me off is that I really wanted to like that movie, but for me it didn't deliver.

reply

I agree that this is not the best comedy of 2010 but its not that worse as some of you say or dislike it so much. Its not that i am easly entertained but i had quite a good laughs while watching this movie for example the BET SCENE or the man "trying to get his arm chopped off", Mirror etc. I think only people on deep depression would not laugh at that.

Sorry for my bad english :P!

reply

reply

I love this film. It's intersting, has a strong sense of humor.

reply

meh. I had high expectations for this movie but after 5 minutes i knew the movie wouldn't live up to the expectations. To much cliches. But then again, it had it's funny moments. Perfect movie for a relax saturdaynight with a few beers (and/or 'smokes').

reply

This film left me breathless, I can't remember the last time I laughed so much in the theater. I haven't even experienced the 80s, being born in 1989.

Okay, so I'm easily entertained. So what? I hate it when these hypocrites pop out in these boards promoting their criteria for good, acceptable humor. Stick your ego up your a**
