This is gonna bomb hard Leno's timeslot

Worse than Conan.

I like Jimmy Fallon, I am not sure if he's going to "bomb" but I don't think he's going to pull in Leno numbers on the Tonight Show.

The fact is they are two different shows and require two different types of hosts.

Conan was a poor fit for The Tonight Show, and a lot of insiders knew he wasn't going to work out.

I won't elaborate, only to say if you've read "The War for Late Night: When Leno Went Early and Television Went Crazy," I will just say I think Jeff Zucker was a moron and Dick Ebersol was right.

I realize the Tonight Show is an institution, or something like that. But what tires me out is this concept that the person who has Late Night needs to take it over eventually. What works on Late Night doesn't work the Tonight Show. It's going to change Fallon, much like they wanted to change Conan. Conan resisted the changes, lost his job, and had to move on. I think Fallon will give into the changes and something will be lost.

And Seth Meyers just doesn't grab me as the type of host who should be taking over Late Night. I almost rather they did what they did back in 1982 and then again in 1993 and go with a relatively unknown discovery. Making Late Night the destination for out of work SNL actors is starting to become tiring, too.

What's funny is Conan's current show conforms more to the Leno formula and classic Carson than Fallon. He's really toned down the crude and juvenile humor that made his mark (e.g Triumph, Masturbating bear), is extremely quick, puts a focus on extended monologues and is one of the best, most sincere interviewers out there.

Fallon just comes out phony and is constantly interjecting and overtalking guests with his own stories. I just want to tell him to shut up and listen sometimes. Plus he seems to go into robot cookie cutter talk show mode, and each episode feels the same. Ever notice how he opens almost every show "Now that's a great New York City crowd?"

If Fallon thinks he's gonna keep an older crowd's interest doing party games and frankly some pretty stupid sketches he's sorely mistaken.

I think it's fairly obvious that Fallon is going to have to give up a lot of his material for the Tonight Show. Conan was under pressure to give up more than he did but he didn't play along. I see Fallon caving in to NBC's demands like a puppy with a treat dangled in front of his face.

I like the energy Fallon brings to the table, but I see your points. He does have learning to do, but I think he's got what it takes to make it on the Tonight Show in the long run. At first, I think he's going to fail and Letterman will pull ahead in the ratings.

But, for what I really think...NBC is just screwing up a good thing by doing this crap. I am not a Leno fan, but the fact remains he's #1 and should be given an opportunity to retire when he's ready to retire.

reply

Stop with the ratings thing. Since Comcast has acquired NBC they've done nothing but cut the fat. The Tonight Show has let a lot of people go lately just to tighten the budget.

My point is Jimmy Fallon is only becoming the host of the Tonight Show because he's cheaper than Leno. Jay makes thirty million a year, and Dave Letterman is right behind him with 27 million. I bet you that Jimmy is going to make way less than that. On top of that his replacement is another Lorne Michaels guy in Seth Meyers. This is a monetary move, and anything else should be forgotten.

Jimmy Fallon has no other prospects, seriously. He needs this job just like Comcast needs him to be paid cheaply, in network terms.

reply

Does anyone believe his current fans will tune in an hour earlier? I think he is more liked by the celebrities who go on these shows than Leno. Gervais & Louis CK for example won't go on Leno. Fallon does need to listen better... sometimes his guests will only say one or two sentences!

That being said, he is fun to watch & it is possible this is a show that parents & their kids can watch together.

reply

I think Jimmy will do better with the older crowd than Conan did. He was just too bizarre for them. I liked that about him, but I can understand its not everyone's cup of tea and he really wasn't the guy for the Tonight Show. I'm just worried about NBC trying to turn Jimmy into a copy of Leno. His monologue has already gotten longer. What works for Jay isn't necessarily gonna work for someone else. They need to let Jimmy be himself, but they probably won't.

Actually, Jay took a big salary cut last year to save the jobs of many of his staffers who otherwise would've been fired by NBC. It's not Jay's salary that's lead to NBC doing this; he'd host the show for a dollar if they let him. It's the fact that what Jay brings NBC in late night ratings isn't enough to cover their losses in primetime. They want a host who attracts more 18-49s than Jay already does, which is a rather daunting task when he's already #1 in that demographic. But they need enough younger viewers who'll pass up twitter for an hour to actually watch "The Tonight Show", and subscribe to NBC online for "Tonight Show" clips. Replacing Jay with Conan came out of NBC fearing Conan was poised to be the next King of late night on another network, and they felt that Jay could not maintain his ratings lead over the long haul. They were wrong. Will this turn out to be just as bad a gamble, though? We'll see.

Jimmy Fallon has no other prospects, seriously. He needs this job.

Yes, he's the luckiest guy in show business. Considering the dismal shape his career was in five years ago, who could imagine this guy being the heir to television's most prestigious late night institution? Lorne Michaels was his absolute saviour.

Jimmy's whole bag is being tied into the young people, the college crowd. That doesn't wash for the Everyman American demo that Jay hits out of the park every night. Fallon's show is going to crash and burn, technically. I guarantee you he pulls the same numbers he's pulling right now, the same way Conan did. All you get when you promote the Late Night host is the Late Night's audience. Seeing what's happened and what's about to happen again, I think NBC actually had it right all those years ago giving the job to Jay instead of Dave.

leno has maturity and connects with his guests. He has a sophisticated sense of humor and is at ease. Fallon conducts butt-kiss fests instead of interviews and is always giggling. He's an immature bore.He has no substance. He'll bomb on the Tonite Show.

i agree. It's honestly distracting how annoyingly bad Jimmy is at being a talk show host lol seriously if he lost this job you think he'd go right back to SNL or what?

That Full House skit and many of his other bits like the rap montages etc. are why I don't think he will be successful at the Tonight show, unless the audience for show is primarily around his age bracket. Much of Fallon's comedy plays to those whose pop cultural references are embedded in the 80s and 90s. A number of my family members in their 50s and up watch Leno, and they wouldn't have a clue about something like Full House or the History of Rap, and without the references its not entertaining.

And related, my 60 something father told me that he saw Mitt Romney's slow jam the news segment on Meet the Press and he didn't get why that was "supposed to be funny". The whole concept just didn't resonate with him. I am sure he will be watching Letterman once Fallon takes over.

Well then that's good for Fallon, and hopefully that means they will give him time to succeed. From the whole Conan Tonight Show debacle, I assumed young people weren't watching that time slot and that's why it was given back to Leno so fast. But I guess I don't know the details. Sounds like the network has faith in Fallon so hope this works out for him.

I do not think Fallon will be a hit at 11:30. That time slot attracts people who are older who watch the news at 11, not the demo who likes how kind of humor. There is a reason Leno is #1 at that time slot. I think Fallon is very likable, but his show is not what people at that time want to see. I personally think he's super frat boy like and can't interview. NBC is always screwing up their primetime lime up and they suck in the ratings, seems like they are doing that again. Why do you replace the person in the lead? Not saying I love Leno, but he's not failing at the time slot.

Older people may be "worthless" ratings wise, but if the younger demo mostly does not tune in at 11:30, and the majority of the audience are people who watch the 11:00 news and watch the talk show afterward, Fallon may be in trouble. I work with kids at the younger end of the demo, and I'm at he end of the desired demo, and I see them not tuning in until later. Ratings for local news are mostly the older group. It would be nice if he succeeds, but I don't know if his rap/ pop culture skits will succeed at that time slot.

I like Jimmy, I've liked him since SNL, but I think he needs to work on developing new comedy segments. I think his humor does not appeal to a broad audience, and as much as inline a lot of his musical skits, I think he sings and performs too much. Part if being a talk show host is making the show spotlight your guests. I think Jimmy does way too much performing. Sometimes, like Conan, he just comes across too sophomoric, although I think he's funnier and has more potential than Conan.

Totally agree. Fallon isn't funny AT ALL! No one does a monologue better than Leno. I can't believe he gave up his show for this idiot!
