Why was this released as a tv movie when it was made for theaters?

I'm not saying it was good. But it was made for theaters, had a budget of ten million which I think is a lot of money lost for a tv movie. Why not at least give it a chance to make more of that back than making whatever it did on television?


Editing to add this question: did anything get cut to show it on tv? And if so, when you watch it online, is it shown as the tv version or the original version?
