Yes, because it sold well enough. I hope they get it right this time. Good cinematography & music isn't enough for a Darko film, we need a good story and good acting too!

BTW I doubt Kelly is involved, he is simply credited as the creator of the Darko universe/characters.

While there are no details, we've learned that 20th Century Fox is already working on developing a third entry in the Donnie Darko franchise. Their sequel, S. Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale his Blu-ray and DVD on May 12th and told the tale of Samantha Darko, Donnie's now grown up sister who also enters the tangent universe. Something that also caught our ears is that Richard Kelly might actually be involved at some capacity. But file this under rumor until we can receive official confirmation.

I guess that the pretensions of a certain Mr. Lucas are beginning to spread throughout the film-making world...

Jesus Christ, will people stop coming up with ridiculous reasons to constantly trash George Lucas? He did not invent the sequel. He did not make sequels to other people's films. There is no valid comparison here. Give it a rest, already.

Be logical, a sequel would be about his older sister, Elizabeth >_< But seriously, a sequel to Donnie Darko should really be set right after the original and be about Gretchen Ross. A real sequel would have some weird thing where the 2 timelines (the one where the jet engine is avoided and the one where it isn't) kind of cross or get mixed up, or something similar, and have Gretchen begin to get visions of having been with Donnie and begin to question what is real and what isn't. Did they ever name the anomaly that appears from Donnie's chest? They could have had that somehow link into the timeline - e.g. try and find a way to prevent what happened to Donnie >_< Dammit wtf man, a meteor and a bunny called Iraq Jack? Which idea sounds better? :(

I find it sad when a masterpiece like Donnie Darko is catching up to Anaconda and The Land Before Time in number of terrible sequels...

Who wouldn't have rather watched a movie about Gretchen than Samantha?? She had serious issues before Donnie.

Seriously though - they should just stop. Something this ... involved shouldn't be handled by the people who didn't create it in the first play.

While you are generally right with this statement, there are always exceptions to the rule, Aliens would be one of them.

It really just depends on the people involved, some people are just immensely talented and others are talentless hacks who are just pretenders.

Yeah I totally agree, I was very disappointed that they didn't use the other original characters.

They should go back to the original characters. It should be set after Donnie Darko and fully ignore S.Darko.
Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary Mcdonnell, Daveigh Chase and Holmes Osbourne should all return.

The idea of sequels are good, but its difficult to come up with a story that continues after such a great, unique and complicated film.

And after all of this time I think it would be pretty difficult to get everyone back together for a real sequel, but we can hope. It would be nice to rewrite something that fell short. Donnie Darko is my favorite movie of all time and I was pissed RK wasn't involved with the project.

Maybe Richard Kelly was sick of what a *beep* up job they did with S. Darko so decided to make a decent sequel. I hope he's involved. :/
