This movie is horrible.

The name of this movie should not be "It's Complicated", it ought to be "Sodom and Gommorah Meets Warm and Fuzzy Chick Flick". Or "Be Immoral and Selfish --- It's Funny".

The two lead characters are so bereft of morals, ethics, character, maturity and discipline, the only people who would enjoy this movie would have to be selfish, hedonistic sociopaths.

Jake (Alec Baldwin ' s character) is just the worse kind of person. He marries Meryl Streep ' s character, has three children, cheats on her with a woman half his age, divorces his wife while his youngest is only 10, marries his mistress, has a child and then cheats on his new wife with his ex, and then leaves his second wife and child. Is this supposed to be funny?
He is the definition of selfish, impulsive and irresponsible. His actions in real life would cause the destruction of two families. But, hey, this is supposed to be a comedy --- real funny.

Meryl Streep's character (Jane) is supposed to be in her 60s, divorced with three kids, successful and rich. But she runs around giggling, laughing and acting like a silly 14 year old girl. She knows adultery is wrong but she has no discipline. She can't say no to temptation. Everything embarrasses her. She is so childish. Incredibly, her friends and her psychiatrist all tell her to continue an illicit affair with the man who destroyed her family and is now trying to destroy another. Now that is real moral and responsible.

Besides the blatant immorality, the movie is annoyingly bad. The first half is so sugary and sappy. Everyone is running around laughing, giggling, hugging everyone --- it is nauseating. And that insipid guitar music made me want to blow my brains out.

We know who the target audience is --- it is middle aged women. Meryl Streep's character is rich, successful, lives in an upscale Southern California neighborhood and has her own successful business --- a bakery no less. She rarely goes to work. She is always cooking lavish meals for friends and family, going to parties, dating one man and banging another. She lives in a baby mansion and is adding on an even larger kitchen than she already has.

Alec Baldwin's character is a super rich lawyer who is chronically immature, selfish, impulsive and inconsiderate. And who, although he never works either, is always in his Mercedes-Benz and business suit.

We have Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin and Jim Krasinski --- eye candy for middle-aged women. We have money, nice expensive homes, a loving family, and rich successful characters who never work. All this is supposed to appeal to the target audience.

It is pathetic to me that this movie even got a 6 rating. A sad commentary on what passes for entertainment these days. This movie shouldn't be titled "It's Complicated", it should be titled "It's Awful". I gave it a rating of 1.

What do you think?

reply

The child of his mistress wasn't his kid.

You don't have to be immoral, selfish and hedonistic to watch this movie, you just have to want to be. It's called escapism - it's fun to watch the train wreck, not be in it. It was never marketed as a morality tale, it's a comedy out of Hollywood for heaven's sake!

And I wouldn't really consider Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin (in this film, anyway) eye candy for a woman of any age! Even the quirky John Kasminski's a stretch...

I agree. That is why I started a thread titled "At best, this movie works as a fantasy". Last time I looked, it was on the this page farther down.

I must tell you; when he does that great big crooked smile; well, it would take nothing less than a St. Bernard puppy to beat that look.

It's not a great movie... But I think it's quite good that it's taking the romcom in another direction- older people! People who have already known each other half their lives. Yes older people have sex too and have complicated affairs and situations.
No they're not v moral, but I don't think that's really the point. It's more presenting a situation and seeing what happens with these characters.
Dyou not think the Alec Baldwin character learns and suffers throughout this film tho?

reply

I don't think he did. He only seemed to suffer because he didn't get what he wanted --- like a baby. He was suffering due to not getting what he wanted, not because he felt what he did was wrong or he had hurt anybody else.

reply

Disappointing to see great actors and comedians wasted in a substandard vehicle like this.

reply

I do second!

It's just a movie. Don't get so agitated about it!!

I am not agitated. I was just making an observation.

I agree. But i think Meryl Streep's friends were worse than she was, their dialogue was disgusting and they were a bad influence, bad company corrupts good morals.

I presume, but don't know if this is a fact that another motive for the existence of this movie is to tell viewers that older people can be sexy and attractive as well because as we see - Meryl Streep oozes sex appeal in this Flick and this storyline is rare for older characters, it's usually 20, 30 and 40 year olds at the maximum in this type of storyline.

Thank you for agreeing. It is unbelievable that her friends and her psychiatrist would so enthusiastically tell her to continue the affair with another woman's husband. Ridiculous !!!

I agree. Older people can be sexy. But it is because they are older, more mature, more sophisticated and more wise. They don't act silly, immature, ridiculous and reckless like these Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin characters do in this movie.

reply

Exactly. It wouldn't be surprising if the director and the writers are young, that would make sense for this childish storyline.

reply

Nancy Meyers wrote and directed this movie. She was about 60 at the time. So, no excuse there.

reply

I loved this movie. I'm almost 60 myself, but I don't feel that old. I will probably watch it again some day. It was hella fun.
