There is reference to one of the characters being the devil, but who?

I ask this question because 2 of the characters in the movie could theoretically represent the devil. The obvious choice is Mr. D, d for devil, mysterious businessman who sits at the top, and has his daughter's husband killed because he muscled in on his territory. The man drops people like flies.

However, it is Jim, Perlman's character that seems to have more of his characteristics. Smooth talker, con artist, acts nice, but ultimately he ends up making all the profit while everyone else gets there hands dirty. He is kind of overly friend and odd, sold some junk toys to little kids pretty easily, always moving, etc.

And in case its in doubt, I think the fact, that the time lapse says 6.66 weeks later was the dead give away.

so whats your take, do you think one of the characters represents the devil?

It wasnt that obvious til it showed the flashback of Jim robbing martin and him saying that he wasnt what he seemed.but from then on you look back at whats happened and it makes perfect sense,I think Mr.D is called Mr D as a thing to throw you off who the devil is. I could be wrong :)

I agree, I would guess Perlman too - just everything about him screams the perfect snake oil salesman.

I'm hesitant to look deeply into things that aren't deep, but if I had to guess which one of the characters was the devil I'd say both; more likely some values they both represent and the relative tradeoffs or somesuch. Where did they say someone was the devil?

This definitely was a weird movie. What was up with the puzzle dream and then finding the puzzle after killing the guy? And what was the significance of the cowboy picking up the chick if he really was the devil? Because she got her acting job?

Oh wait, ha ha, I get it, the puzzle piece was really in the dog. So he got it but now his dog is dead. Same kind of thing with killing what's his face. And then finding the puzzle piece was supposed to be like a parallel that he gave up love to get the money. And in the end so did she. Does that sound right?

That hardly seems fair, though. Kill dog -> lose dog is an obvious tradeoff, but kill man -> lose girl isn't. Right? Did it ever seem like that was the deal he was making?

Maybe it was deep.

So the question is not who is the devil, but what? Trying to get something for nothing?

Was it worth it?

Both bubba and joy gave up true love in order to get what they want. Definitely not something to throw away lightly, but also hardly irreplaceable.

Long term it might have been.

Then again it's not like they were consciously making that sacrifice. At least not bubba. Maybe it's more about giving up a piece of yourself and the places that leads.

Ending up "dead inside", and eventually dead outside too (like martin).

I literally just got done watching it. I'm surprised to see so few comments here. Is it not popular in the states? It's got to be at least a 7 or an 8 right? Or maybe I'm just a sucker for allegory. Or maybe it's just been a long time since I've seen a move that I could think about.

I kind of gathered that Mr. D was the devil and Perlman was a minion of sorts, Mr. D is running the show and the Second cowboy kind of supports this theory.
