Why are you surprised that javed akhtar wrote that? A lot of musicians smoke MJ, its not what it is shown to be in the media, a hard drug that destroys life, It has been used in India for its psychedelic effects by Hindus, Sikhs and various other people by either eating it or smoking it or drinking it for more than a 1000 years.
The only reason that I was able to find on why ganja got illegal seems to be cause of our desire to please Americans, but since Even they are on the verge of legalizing it, in the next 10-15 yrs, It will be legal in India as well.
