(SPOILER) My problems with the movie

respect to the movie for presenting a rock band with some decency. Film was well made - decent acting, dialogue, direction. HOWEVER, i'll be a nitpicking grandma and state my problems with the plot:

1. Farhan's character's anger and complete disassociation is not believable. So he had a bad tiff with band mates - i'd imagine typically a guy would perhaps do music with a different set of ppl/maybe go solo - and definitely not dump his love interest.

2. When there's nothing to do with the plot Rob gets a brain tumour. WTF - just cos he didn't have a girl didn't mean he had to die!

3. The end - with the guys enjoying champagne on a beach like millionaires. Unnecessary. It takes away from the level one expects such a movie to match. It would have been just fine if the guys go back home after the gig with a word that they were going to keep rocking on.

4. Movie fails to successfully resolve the idea of "Rock On" - so what does it say in the end? It's a story of four guys, yes, but it doesn't rise above it to talk about life; about rocking-on in life. Rob rocking inspite being on deathbed was too convenient and exploitative.

I really liked this movie as well and thought it was well made. However, I noticed those things too and overall the film had a few flaws.

1. I noticed that too, I get where they were going with his character but I think they could have handled the situation better. What I noticed/what I think: They show Aditya as willing to compromise everything just to make it big but still loyal to his friends. He really believed in Magik, so when that all fell apart despite all his efforts, he just gave up on it. He doesn't just leave the bandmates but his girlfriend (Tanya) as well, so it was just a fact that he needed to escape. Remember his talk with Tanya when they reunite, she says she knew he would never come back and he says well then she knew better than he did. So I guess at the time he left for Delhi, he didn't plan on leaving his old life forever but thats just how it happened to work out and he moved on, just as the others did. It's understandable but weird that his fight is with Joe yet he lets go of his long/good friendship with Tanya, Rob and KD. Fine, he comes back to Mumbai and doesn't want to go out of his way to reunite with people that had, for a lack of better words, hurt him. But when Sakshi asks him if he knows Killer "KD" Drummer, he seems to get bitter, but I don't see why he would be angry at KD or Rob (just because the band fell apart and he doesn't want to bring up those memories again, I mean Rob and KD were equally [even bigger] victims of what happened). I get thats the transformation they show, him getting over the bitterness of what happened but I don't know I just don't get his anger towards Rob and KD at times. Even his anger towards Joe seems off, I get he's a man of compromises but he never seems to understand that he was at fauth for what happened when they were shooting the music video.

2. I know, seriously the films gets so predictable from Rob's disease, to what song they perform, what choice Joe makes and even what Aditya names his kid. The moment Rob says he has a headache and refuses to take any medication from Sakshi, I knew. I even knew it would be a brain tumor (especially thanks to the him losing his hair comments). They do say he knew about his brain tumor, so I think he willingly wouldn't want to have a girlfriend, right? I mean if he knew he could die at any moment, why would he put someone through that? Rob says he didn't want to tell them about his brain tumor because he didn't want that to be the reason to keep them together but in a way it kind of does. I think the Rob brain tumor track was there just to kind of add emotion especially at the end when they don't know if Joe will show up or not even though he knows how much it means to Rob. It's weird but I think I expected more emotion from the guys when they found one of their best friends was dying. (The only one that does is Joe when he goes home to Debbie and tells her.) Another reason, is that they didn't want the question of whether the band makes it big (which would have been criticized for being idealized) or not (which would be an odd ending) and the only way to do that was to kill one of them off so they don't perform anymore.

3. Yeah, that caught me a little offgaurd. I expected them to tie the loose ends up but didn't like the way they did it.

4. You know, I'm glad you said that. The film is called Rock On!! as in to always do so which is portrayed with Rob, performing even knowing he's going to die (which ties in with point #2). However, at the end it says that their performance with Rob was the last one they did so Magik once again as a band does not exist (well as far as public performances are concerned) so it goes against the title in a way and what they had set out to do with Rob's character. Because they once say that they (Magik) belong on the stage so when they stop performing at the end, it kind of goes against the film. I don't know if it would have been better to end the band with Rob's death (as they did) or to show them going on despite what happened. But I guess to make up for the band ending again and to keep the title accurate, they had the story about Joe and KD starting the music company that launches new artists.

Also, I found the scene when they're shooting music video a bit off for many reasons from Aditya's ignorance and Joe's outburst.

Those are just my views, I kind of went off on a rant so I hope they make sense. :)

I can't say I disagree to even a single word to what you guys are saying. My thoughts exactly. It would have better if there were no tragedies.

*************Warning!! Here be spoilers***********
Rob honestly believed in MAGIK and did not want the band to be reunited for his sake, like he mentions. About them enjoying at the end, the film makers wanted to say that band members made it big. Nothing much to add as you've said most of it.

End Note: This is Bollywood, there has to be a little drama in every movie. And people like happy endings ;D

I am impressed. You have analyzed this movie so very nicely.... I agree with what you have said...and it does make sense. But lets just be happy that finally we have a Rock movie in bollywood and hopefully more of this kind in near future...and the moive does have some beautiful moments...
Kuch bhi ho yaar...for a bollywood "movie", the music is absolutely fantastic!!!

i totally agree with those convenient loopholes in the script.aditya's anger was out of line.

and maybe they had to include those convenient elements 'cause thats what sells.people love to see the cast in the happiest state ever.funny cause i thought "rock on" would've meant more to do with music rather than their individual accomplishments. the ending and the spat was pretty close to dil chahata hai.

With All Due Respect To Moviemakers.

I am going to share what I think of Rock On. I feel it had a strong hangover of Dil Chahta hai in terms of scripting. Little Dispute = Huge Mess = Breaking Freindship.

Aditya's anger was exactly not anger in my opinion. It was his way of moving on in life. He though by not saying or discussing his past, his ure will never resemble or connect with anything in the past. He is a person when one thing goes wrong, for him, everything goes wrong.

My perception about Aditya's character is that he beleived in Magic so much, he loved Magic so much that when he felt there was no future together for the band he just changed his life tracks totally. Which I personally believe is a common nature in many humans out there. Rather then dealing with problem they prefer to run away from it. Where it keeps haunting them in the back of their mind.

Emotion is in totally different flavour when it comes to the plot. We all can relate to few traits, incidents or indeed friends in life which basically was integral part of the movie.

Just my words, though should share after reading everyone's view here.

Music also is collector's edition! Shelf life of Rock albums are usually eternal.

Highly Recommended Product -

1. Well, you cant say that a person should have acted that way or the other.
I have seen many people with really different characters and from my experience I cannot say adithya's character was unbelievable.
There are people who try to move on with life and try to run away from the past because something goes wrong.
If you recall, during the shooting, not just Joe, even KD and Rob were complaining about being put into the background(the possible reason y he never keeps in touch with any of them, not just joe). And then fight breaks out between him and joe, and no one gets to talk to each other after that. Maybe he feels that he is left out or the other three could not stand him getting a little more attention. Anyway, after that adithya's reaction was to run away. This may be because his character is a little immature, because first he tries to run away leaving everything behind, and secondly even though he runs away he cant escape it or forget it, ie. he could never really move on. That is the reason why he used to live a mechanical life without much social interaction outside office, without spending time with his wife or other friends, or as sakshi puts it his life is not full. That is also the reason why he never destroyed the photos of the band members, though he kept them far from him. You have to notice the difference in adithya after they reunite and before. Like how he starts to smile again, his attitude towards his wife or even the security guard changes. That was how important the joe, kd and rob were to him.
As for his girlfriend, well, it was never mentioned in the movie that they were so deeply in love, though they were pretty close. I mean it might just be a college fling for him. Now how many people takes college fling too seriously.

2. Rob "last chance" was important for the concert to go on. else it wud seem strange that joe wud leave a job just to perform in the concert. Joe came back because he knew that it wud be the last chance to perform together. if the 4 are not together, ie without rob, it wudnt be magik.

3. cud have been avoided. but nothing that spoils the movie. Just says that every one was stuck in their past but in the end everyone moved on and things got better.
And MOST IMPORTANT, is the message of the movie that do what you want to do and follow ur dreams. That is y debbie becomes a stylist, joe and kd does something that has to do with music.

4. probably because it is a rock movie, and one of the first rock movie in bollywood if not the first. So, maybe the title was just to promote it

I agree with most of your statements. Well, half of them. I agree with points 3 and 4. I think the problem with Farhan's character's anger and complete dissociation is that we are not given how old he is and we don't get a good idea of exactly how close the band members are with one another. Because to me, it seemed as though they were supposed to be pretty young at that time, even if it didn't look like it, which would imply some lack of maturity on the character's behalf. As for the closeness, it seemed as though Aditya and Joe were supposedly very close. I get this from Aditya having lived with Joe when he first moved to Mumbai and from how Joe beat that other band member up for bumping into Aditya. From those two, I could see how someone may overreact to their best friend hitting him and ruining their BIG music oppurtunity.

As for the second point about Rob having a brain tumor. I agree that it is slightly cliche and dramatic. But it was the fact that he was dying that drove him to want to get the band back together. If he wasn't dying, he may not have cared so much to get one last show, to perform live again. And if he didn't care as much, he may not have even insisted on them getting back together at the birthday party.

As for the ending, I agree that sitting around drinking champaigne like millionaires was overkill. But I don't agree with the explanation that they were trying to show that they all made it big. I think it was just trying to show that they were all happy with their lives now. But I think this point could have been made just by showing them playing music in Aditya's living room with a caption saying, Magik still gets together week to Rock On!

I think this film would've been great if only it had a better writer. Aditya's anger is so unconvincing but also Arjun's sudden anger burst in that scene when they are shooting the music video. I mean, he was shown to be a very cool, down-to-earth person, and I would expect such a person to talk cool-headed about the issue, but him showing completely angry suddenly was so out-of-character. I liked the film, but I think a better writer would've payed more attention on the characterization and the emotions. Instead, the writers just offers all the drama and does not fully convince us (or at least me) where that comes from.

I m sorry bro but i love this movie and i dont think there was any flaw in script.
I feel like this may be because i m very much biased to this movie :D

I believe the character of Farhan Akhtar was genuine. C'mon guys you have seen the same thing on Dil Chahta Hai between Aamir and Akshay. Any guys got slapped and been called a show off in the band would probably leave them behind with a life having no memories of them.. There are different persons in this world. We should accept this character.

It's called Rock On!! because they continue to rock on after 10 years too after having families and a real job, etc. My 4 year old cousin understood that and enjoyed the movie. Why are you thinking so hard?
