Actually, me and my friends agreed that he was one of the most interesting characters. I'd never thought of him as such a Machiavellian figure before and his scheming with Hurd really amused us. Ken Clark's blunt meeting with her was the best though, talk about puling no punches!

One of the performances of the show. You just don't get to be PM if you're some idiot who wears his underpants on the outside, you need to be scheming, devious, ruthless, in short a politician.

A reflection of the subtlety of the portrayal that the OP should have missed the point so completely.

I agree. I had never really thought of him as scheming before watching this, but when you read about what the events were it does make a lot of sense.
