Better than Hostel

Although they have the same basic premise, where Hostel was predictable, Invitation Only is unpredictable. Not just in the storyline, but also in the characters reactions, most likely a result of cultural differences. Hopefully Taiwan makes more horror films.

Like Hostel was any better.

It's a horror movie, made in Taiwan. If you want award-winning acting you're in the wrong theater.

YES, Hostel IS better. Everybody's a total snob when it comes to Hostel, i'm not saying it's a great film, but at least it's an original premise and it has certainly inspired a lot of clones, basically Hostel has made it's impact on the film industry, whether that's good or bad is besides the point. In 50 years time there might still be an audience for Hsotel. Invitation Only, however, will be long forgotten, because it contains absolutely no originality.

I think perhaps you should watch it for yourself and judge because I thought the acting was of a higher standard than that usually found in Hostel.

Yes, Invitation Only is unpredictable, because you never know what kind of bullsh.t the characters are about to do or say. For example, what was the cause of all the killing? Spoiler alert: It started like Saw - a few people who were guilty of something (lying, cheating, blablabla...) but through to movie the whole plot was just stupid. One of the killer says: "Dont tell me that you never hated rich people?" Wtf? That should be a reason to kill somebody? I understand that the creators of this crap wanted to put there some higher philosophical sense but the usual plot "we are rich, sick and perverse and we kill and torture people because we can and it is fun" would be much more believable than this plausible "we do it for a reason" idea.
But Maria Ozawa is hot, at least something watchable in this movie.

reply

Apparently they did have a reason. The big guy who gave the lead guy the invitation ticket said something about avenging his sister's death because some "low-life" broke into his house killed their parents and his sister in front of him or some bs like that... I don't even know. At some point I just started skipping through scenes because the movie was so poor it was nearly unwatchable.
I would give this a 2/10 but since Maria's boob's in slow motion were so impressive I give this a 3/10.

Julianne Chu was the only reason I would sit through this movie again.

She outshined Ozawa for me in the hotness department.

I enjoyed the film for what it was although I couldn't tell if Hitomi died at the end or not. Last time we see her she is slumped over in the car after being stabbed. I'd preferred if they had made it more explicit.

reply

I have to admit, I wondered the same thing. There is not even a mention, a nod, anything to indicate her ultimate fate. She was badly wounded. But I never got the sense she could not recover from her wounds.
