Why does Michael Shank's character carry an umbrella everywhere? He seems really attached to it.

He's following in the footsteps of Professor Henry Jones. You never know when you might need to bring down an airplane with a flock of birds.

Maybe he's afraid he'll melt if he gets wet? But it also protects against the sun.
