Well...so long LMI board!

There have been interesting times on this board. Great place to hear different theories about the many layers of LMI. The early influx of the Social Justice Warriors wasn't much fun, but they mostly found new dragons to slay.

Take care everyone and enjoy your lives. Remember to smile!

Many of us know each other from other boards but this place getting shutdown hurts. Remember Matt acknowledged us passionate Let Me In fans of IMDB? Remember we helped a few people through some difficult times? 2010 and 2011 were amazing years here.

Indeed! One of our friends was a beautiful writer but had a terrible home life. He had a good soul and we helped him through some tough times.

And that was so cool to get a shoutout from Matt Reeves! His career has really gone well since then. He's even in the rumor mill to direct the next Batman movie. (I doubt he would do it...he is very picky)

And now Kodi and Chloe are all grown up! Wow! Nice to see them both doing well too.

At least we have the FB group so we don't lose touch.

I'm going to miss this place.

And yes, Harpo, I'll probably even miss you. How sad is that? 

I know, right? I'll miss you too Jameron! 😍

It's pretty sad, but that's the corporate way. And I guess we're supposed to be happy that Zuckerberg's happy.

I have a few boards that I've been inputting on for up to 8 years. Ever since the beginning, I've had this strange habit of saving my really long posts, as emails, into a local email folder. I guess it was so that if I had to re-argue something with somebody, I wouldn't have to do it from memory. And of course, these boards have the annoying habit of dropping stuff after a couple of years, so that was another reason to secure a copy.

(By the way, this was for my own stuff; I never bothered to store anybody else's -- so you can all relax! Ha!)

At least many of us have our various websites to continue the cause, such as:

PS. It will be interesting to see if the Internet Archive secures any of these discussions... http://archive.org/web/web.php Already, the URL for this board brought up some interesting results back to 2012 or earlier, which was before even I came here.)

I went and looked and it brought up the page from late Oct 2010.

http://web.archive.org/web/20101109114323/http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1228987/board/threads/

Didn't save all the threads. Too bad, there were a couple of posters who wrote out long poetic posts. The poster "ohhmyy" was a talented writer.

Some counter-reactions:

Of course, the cynical among us could imagine this as some corporate ploy - to threaten to close up the joint, in order to draw customers (back) in. Sort of a "who shot JR" but "let's close up the boards" - and see what transpires. "Maybe we can suck them into paying $1.99 a month or something like that."

As for the FB group in the link, I find it hard to imagine that they can't monetize this site. It's probably partly due to the bleed from the IMDBpro, which must be losing signups given that it's grossly overpriced. It's probably also partly due to the way they dump old posts off the end, after 4-5 pages. That's one thing that's made me reluctant to waste much time here (writing), when I know it's going to disappear into the ether some day.

re: the "alternatives" at FB: I'm really nervous that Zuckerberg is gaining more and more of our time and attention.

I'm a member of one group ONLY, and spend 10 minutes a day there. But I can see why and how it's taking over the world. It and Google. At least with Microsoft and its business tools, in the 90s, we could leave it at work when we went home.

Well at least we get one last example of why the IMDB boards had such a bad reputation. 😅

What are posters like Octo going to do now? The trolls who polluted this board for so long are going to be lost without the ability to pretend they know what everyone else should be watching, what movies should exist, and that Americans are too lazy to read subtitles! lol...

reply

I haven't been on this board in, probably, about 5 or 6 years... and from what I remember I wandered away mainly because, for all the positive discussion, there was a constant wall of pointless, relentless negativity from people who seemed to endlessly recycle poor-quality cine-snobbery and the same old non-arguments.

Anyway, with the imminent dissolution of the boards, I've been wandering down past alleyways, and I had to come here and look around. The days were certainly intense back then, and in... what, 14 years on IMDB, I don't think I encountered another board like it.

Nothing lasts forever, hey ho...

Heya Combat.

Yes...the internet is a wonderful thing...but it can disappear in a flash and leave nothing behind. Not a good idea to get addicted to any online game either.

Going well!

Yeah, any time a LMI related thought pops up, we'll just have to hit up our FB LMI friends.

These message boards were a unique thing. Having a different board for every movie and personality is a great idea. You gotta think something will fill that void.

Here is a good article about the closing of the boards. This quote in particular made me think of this board:

It’s true the toxicity of content seen on IMDb’s boards is an unacceptable embarrassment to the site. It’s also true that between throwaway posts from trolls, there’s been a wide wealth of valuable dialogue exchanged among passionate film fans that help further our collective interpretation of different films. Some of these posts are simple questions from people who didn’t understand a plot point but other posts can be unique interpretations of film that can make us look at a work in an entirely different way. Regardless of how enjoyable the experience is, what can’t be disputed is that for over 25 years, IMDb’s message boards have served as the Internet’s premier agora to hold conversation and debate on the art of filmmaking.

Bummer about the closure: Any particular old-school posting board rising to the top of suggestions for an alternative?

Some people were mentioning this one: https://www.themoviedb.org/

It's got individual boards for each movie and actor too. There are several options though.

Thanks, this is just what I was looking for. The other forums just mash all discussion threads together within it's board (ie Horror board, Romance board, 80s board, etc), regardless of which film/tv show it's about.
