Conflicted

I dont know Lee personally, so my opinions are based solely from his stand up shows...

I am not sure i like him. He comes across to me as a bit of snob, a bit arrogant and full of himself...He almost seems to look down on his audience as being too dumb for him. But that doesnt make sense, the dumb ones dont watch him!

But in the interviews with Armando and chris morris on the show, he seems to take the piss out of himself...which suggests maybe he isnt really like the way he comes accross...

BUT, i do find his comedy clever and funny! He is one of my favourite stand ups!

So is he trying to come across as a somewhat unlikeable person to aid his comedy? DOes it even matter how i think of him, if his is doing his job and entertaining me?

I feel the same way about Gervias and Russel Brand...they are funny, but i wouldnt want to spend a moment in their company. I can't watch them on chat shows or something, they anoy me.

it takes a while to understand his act.

the comedy vehicle chapters are a bit short to do that. i recommend you check out "41st best standup comedian". you will se clearer after that.

Stewart Lee the Comedian is kind of a character that Stewart Lee the person uses on stage. In character, he is all of those things you mentioned (snob, etc.) and that's part of the routine.

I'm sure there's plenty of overlap between the character and the man, but suffice to say, I highly doubt he'd be much like his stage persona if you were to chat with him.

It's not uncommon for artists of any kind of be complacent or genuinely displeased with the makeup of their own audience, which is of course conflicting with their pure love of the audience for coming to see them. So, he makes that part of the show.

Dude's a satirist, and makes a living making fun of things. He knows that he needs to do the same to himself if his comedy is worth anything, and that's how he does it, by playing the smug, insecure, high strung comedian.

Listen to this interview with him, and I'm sure he'll win you over, at least on this particular issue.
