I can't help wondering...

If this guy didn't decide to gain a hundred pounds so he could make an inspiring and profitable movie about losing them again.

I thought that too, but who cares?

I agree, it was well worth seeing. Especially his helping the truck driver - that was truly inspiring. When you think about it, it's not really a "fast". I mean think of all those powerful beasts, buffalo and such, that roam the savannahs of Africa - they eat nothing but grass! Which is more or less what he's doing, except juicing it first. I'll bet you could survive quite healthfully just by juicing grass. Save some money too.

"beasts" are built to eat grass, cows even have a special stomach and bacteria for it … but we do not, which is why you do not see people eating grass.

Juiced wheatgrass is considered one of the most potent superfoods in existence. You could probably subsist on it quite healthfully. It contains high amounts of every conceivable nutrient including protein. It's been cultivated for over 7,000 years.

That's funny … thought you said "grass".

reply

What do you mean? It's a cereal grass, also known as one of the "true grasses". It's grass, any way you cut it.

Did he decide to do this in his early 20s, when the photos showed he started his over indulgent lifestyle? He figured when he was 22 or so that he'd gain 100 pounds, get a really annoyingly nasty auto-immune disease in urticaria, and decide to make a huge change and a film at 41? That's some incredible foresight there.

No, I think the guy is a fairly savvy dude, but he's not that prescient. And let's be honest, it wouldn't have been half as good had he not randomly come across Phil at the truck stop, and talked with him long enough to make the impression he did. Otherwise, Phil probably would have been dead today instead of reaching out to Joe and starting his own journey.

Someone should go teach them how to change the channel.

Phil was definitely the highlight. Remember though that an Australian friend in docu said he had a history of putting on and taking off huge amounts of weight, so he would have known exactly what to expect.

And why is that, Toni? It was clearly said that he was a yo-yo dieter throughout his life. Why is it so hard for you to imagine he may have conceived of the movie before putting on the weight he then lost during the movie?

During an interview one of Joe's friends said his weight was going up and down over the years more then a brides nighty. So, he's been trying for years not just to lose but keep the weight off.

Looks like he finally did it by:

Turning it into a business which he's good at doing.
Putting himself in a different location, which would make it harder to indulge in old eating habits.
Putting himself in front of the camera, which creates extra pressure to succeed.
Making exercise a habit.
Helping others which forces him to be a constant example for them.
