Joe looked worse by the end..

Not talking about from when he first started, but I think he looked the healthiest shortly after the 60 day mark. Then again, I'm not positive on the overall timeline here.

When he started the fast, he was fat for sure.. but still packed on a decent amount of muscle for his frame. After the 60 days, this was pretty evident. But by the end of documentary, you could tell he lost most of that muscle. His shoulders were not as broad, and his gut was actually sticking out more than his chest, with little definition overall. He just had a weaker build than before.

I guess a raw food diet, coupled with all that cardio, won't yield much lean muscle mass, if any. One of main drawbacks of this whole craze is the major lack of quality protein in your diet. Great for weightloss and overall health, that cannot be disputed. But if a man wants to look his best, he needs animal flesh in his diet.. or a healthy dose of whey protein sups daily.

Good documentary.. I enjoyed it, and agree with the basic premise here. But to adopt that juicing/raw lifestyle indefinitely? I'm not so sure..

In the beginning they talked about moderation of everything.. that includes going fruit/veggie crazy for your whole life! Haha.. my two cents.

Eat one or two egg whites a day and you are good to go.

I guess, for a whopping 10 grams of protein.

Vegetarians don't have it bad at all, considering all the dairy and eggs.

The Vegans, however.. I'm not sure how they do it. Tofu, soy, nuts and beans..

reply

Well, kale seemed to be a big component of his juices..

Protein content? 4.3g per 100. I'm sure he was getting more than his fill.

It's a myth that vegetables don't contain protein, and a further myth that mass amounts of protein are required for muscle growth. Where do you think gorillas get their protein from? You can easily acquire requisite protein and essential amino acids from a vegan diet. People overstate the need for large amounts of protein, mostly due to indoctrination by the meat/milk cartels.

edit: If you were concerned about protein intake, you could just include some nuts/legumes in your juices. They juice just fine. It would up your caloric intake somewhat, of course. There's also Vitamin B-12, which is found almost exclusively in animal(-based) foodstuffs; so it might be wise to supplement that, and I'm sure there's other stuff too. No diet is perfect.

Or you could just eat meat and have tons of vitamins, healthy fat, and protein. One big flaw of the film is he never told us how much muscle he lost. Probably more than half the weight he lost was lean body mass, which means he ended up in worse health than before he started his diet.

So 4.3g protein per 100g. So eating 2.2 pounds of Kale gets 43g of protein, which is less than the minimum required by small females to maintain healthy organ function. Using beans and rice is better, but Joe didn't do that. Let me put it this way: there are essential fatty acids and essential amino acids, meaning that your body needs you to eat them or your body doesn't function right. These are found in abundance in meat, where you need super-specialized food to eat them as a vegan. Our bodies are made to eat meat. Why try to fight that?

Because it's debatable. If we are "meant" to eat meat, we're meant to eat it much more sparingly than we currently do. There's as many studies linking meat consumption with an increased risk of developing cancer as there are denoting its virtues.

You carry prejudice about meat. You're not objective, which is why you will never really find the truth.

Eskimos eat nothing but meat and blubber. How's their cancer rate?

Some people like Joe or Jonah Hill look gaunt if they lose too much weight.

Also anyone who lost something like 80 pounds in 60 days (I forget how much he lost) had to burn through a lot of muscle. A person can mobilize something like 25 calories per pound of fat per day. So if Joe had 50 pounds of fat halfway through his fast, any caloric restrictions beyond 1200 a day would result in lean tissue loss. And because of how fast he lost weight it was probably safe to say he was running a 2000+ calorie a day deficit.

You are totally right. Joe looked the best in the middle, when he had his hair slicked back in the crisp suit. At the end, he looked significantly aged (Granted thats a big problem for fat people when they lose weight ; they look older)

reply

The suit and the fancy hair were a big part of why he looked so good in that particular scene.
