In The Loop

I remember this being on my "to watch" list back when it received an Oscar nomination for writing two years ago... then I simply forgot about it. I was reminded of it today and immediately put it on. What we have here is a pretty unique, crude, and foul-mouthed comedy, but very hard to get into at times.

Not knowing exactly what the film would be about, I was open to anything. I have to say, this isn't a film for everyone. Sure, it has a lot of language and some great lines, but it's also extremely fast-paced with a very hard-to-follow plot. This is a film that will surely benefit from a rewatch, but as it stands right now, I would be lying if I said I wasn't lost many times. Still, the way it blends in the satire and politics with it's great dialogue is sometimes brilliant, sometimes overwhelming. Sometimes though the humor falls flat, and some lines are predictable. Still, i's fast pace helps it in that regard because a joke is over before you know it and so you don't have much times to digest it. Like I said, for the sometimes flat lines this is a good thing, but overall this is also a big problem.

Overall, I did enjoy this film, and it surely stands apart from pretty much any other comedy in the last few years. But it's very hard to get into at times, and very overwhelming in a way. Like I said though, it's recommended and I definitely see myself revisiting this in the future. The ensemble cast though is willing to do anything, and they all do the best work with their dialogue, which is the essential element here.

it's not often that I feel like I "didn't get" a film. I did with this, but whether over time I feel like it's more my fault then it is the film, then I will have to wait to see how much I still want to revisit it in the future.

Only because you're used to something doesn't mean you like it. You're used to me...
