Casting confused the hell out of me!

Actor cast as young Stephan looked like older David and the actor who played young David looked like older Stephan! This had my head spinning towards the very end of the fim when I was trying to keep straight who did what!!

Is it just me? Anyone?

reply

I thought the same thing about the young Stephan looking more like the old David. I also don't remember cell phones like that in 1997. They were more like WWII walkie talkies, but it was still a great film.

reply

They had cell phones like that in 1997. My first cell phone was a Motorola StarTAC in 1996. It was smaller than any of the phones in the movie and many current phones.

reply

They look like the Qualcomm or Nokia I had in 1997/98. They were bigger than the cordless I have now.

reply

WW2 walkie talkie type cellphones were from the 80s, the 90s had pretty small phones. In fact in 1997 I had a small flip phone which was quite small. How old are you that you don't know this? Either that or your memory is getting foggy in your old age.

reply

Yes, I agree. At first I thought that was going to be some plot twist, but just in case, I kept saying "dude from Avatar walked in front of the bus/truck". That turned out to be helpful.

Actually, I thought a big twist was going to be similar to the reveal that she didn't come-to and gun the monster down. I thought we were going to see a replay of the point that David dies, but find that Stephan pushed him. That would have been a better ending.

reply

Ha! Good idea, wish I had thought of that.

reply

Stephan push David under the bus?? No way. TOo out of character. All the flashbacks and no-context clips, plus the mismatched guys for young/old versions were too hard to follow. Have to watch it twice. Did they explain how Stephan become restricted to a wheelchair? Or why Rachel lost her cleft chin? ;)

reply

There was a mention of a car bomb...

That's what I had to do as well. Keep reminding myself, 'Avatar was the one she really loved."

I was confused by that too.

I thought David had married Rachel, and then raised Sarah as his own.

reply

Precisely! Because Sam Worthington (young David) looks like a young version of Tom Wilkinson (old Stephan)!

reply

I agree with you that the casting almost seemed backward. They used the names early enough to make it clear who was who, but appearance wise it seems like it should have been reversed.

reply

I was confused and began to think that some kind of "metaphysical" point about identity might come into play. (Anybody else seen the latest Monte Hellman movie where this kind of metaphysical move actually happens?)

reply

Now I'm really confused. I thought Helen Mirren was David. Actually you are right but it didn't take long to figure it out and my guess is that it was intentional.

reply

Effulgence, you made me laugh out loud! Thanks.
Don't understand why that would be intentional, however.

reply

My husband and I had the same response! We were having a bit of trouble keeping the plot lines straight in the first place, but thought we had the young and old characters straight at least, then we realized we were totally off track with David and Stephan. I really thought the young Stephan looked just like Ciaran Hinds, too, and that Sam Worthington turning in to the man in the wheel chair - whoever he was supposed to be seemed to make sense. I was not sure at first who Tom Wilkinson was supposed to be. For me, the character confusions made concentrating on all the fine acting, especially Helen Mirren's wonderful performance, and the angst of that story line harder to follow.

I agree; the head shapes of the actors were reversed.

completely agree!

If this movie confused you... I don't even know what to say as an insult... This was the least confusing movie I have possibly ever seen. Nothing was confusing. They show you all three characters in the beginning, with close ups, and their names. Then within minutes you are shown their 30 years later counterparts... again with names. The film makers went to such a ridiculous extent to explain to the audience who was who that it was pretty damn cheesy to even watch.

If you were confused by this movie how did you ever keep up with the plot twists of other confusing titles such as Toy Story and Shrek??

Amazing...

If this movie confused you... I don't even know what to say as an insult...

Why would you wish to insult the people who have written here about a genuinely confusing (to them) issue? That says a whole lot more about your smug superiority than their honest admissions.

"Thank you, thank you--you're most kind. In fact you're every kind."

reply

Hey, viddi212, you're funny. I bet when anyone criticizes a movie that you liked, you respond that "...they just didn't get it!"

reply

Hey viddi212 be nice. The casting in this movie confused me too even though I read Proust's 'Remembrance of Things Past" and as a teenager "The Brothers Karamazov" and in Spanish "Don Quixote." How small is your dick now?

The article below has side-by-side pics of Marton Csokas (as "Young Stephan") and CiarĂ¡n Hinds (as the older David).

They definitely looked like they could be father and son. Strange casting, indeed.

This is an old thread, but I just want to add that if you feel so superior that you can not possibly imagine someone out there in the big wide world maybe having some kind of question about the plot of this movie, well, then YOU are the F+++CKING idot.
How superior you must feel.
People like you are the fools.

Too hard to post a respectful thread? Guess so.

reply

Wondering if this was supposed to be helpful.

Why do you have to make an insult (or comment) at all. Your response was totally inappropriate, condescending and unnecessary.
