Memento directed by Takeshi Kitano's fan on a very low budget

That's roughly sums this up, although many other influences from Italian neorealism and French new wave can be found here as well. Not a bad debut, but the movie sometimes is too boring and with long shots of absolutely nothing happens on the screen. Still the effect is a little hypnotizing and interesting, if you are into films directed by fresh film school graduates, but also a little pointless if you put it in perspective of current world cinema. Watch the director, though.
The only big problem that I had was the terrible sound work. I speak Russian and I didn't understand half of the dialogs. The main character and almost all others are mumbling something under their noses and I couldn't understand a word.

Love the title of your post, I'd agree with that comparison.
I myself speak a bit of Russian too and, like you, had a very hard time hearing the characters in the film. However, the director himself said (on Закрытый Показ) that this was done intentionally. I don't remember the exact reason he stated for this but I suspected it while watching the movie and thought it was kind of an interesting tactic, though perhaps not entirely successful.

Thanks.
And lol, I think he was just trying to cover for their incompetent sound guy. When something goes bad just say it was intentional. You can do a lot of intentional distortion in the movie to make some kind of a point. But you don't f[u]ck with the sound.

It's highly doubtful that they shot the entire movie without checking dailies
