Too much...

I agree. I couldn't even follow along because I couldn't understand half of what they were saying. I hate movies like this where you have to strain to understand the words. Are the people who make these films crazy? Do they think that making the dialogue hard to understand makes the film more gritty and realistic? I couldn't understand a freaking word the dude from England was muttering and, as a result, I still do not have a clue as to what his character was all about. All I know is that he blew away some important people at the end of the film. What a joke. Should have been a good film but for this fatal, stupid flaw (of course, maybe the intent was to cover up a weak plot....I'll never know because I couldn't follow the dialogue)

reply

Seriously? Some of you couldn't understand the dialogue so that makes the plot a flawed joke? I think not. One poster said he "couldn't understand a freaking word the dude from England was muttering" - newsflash, the dude from England wasn't muttering, he was speaking with a "Cockney" accent. Granted, it's a very hard accent to follow but he was speaking in a normal voice. I lived in London for 4 years so I had no trouble understanding what he was saying - and believe me his character was a frigging extremely smart, awesome badass. Tis a pity most of you have no ear for accents other than the one from the small corner of the world you live in, because if you did you'd be able to see just how great this movie was.

Who said the plot was a flawed joke? What I said was that I couldn't understand a word they were saying, especially the English fart. Therefore, for all intents and purposes it didn't matter what was going on with the plot. I guess I'll need a to use subtitles next time I see the Cockney dude. Better yet, I think I'll just pass on all movies in which the moron appears.

Well, I also had trouble with the dialog. It was very hard to understand even when I listened several times.

By the way, I never lived in London, and who cares if you did. It wasn't created for people from London. The market is America.

Despite where you lived or what kind of accent any character had, the dialog was hard to understand. Even Gibson was hard to understand.

My little corner of the world is 350 million Americans. That's a little larger than your corner.

And finally, the plot was very flawed. You can't cover things up if you keep killing people. If you are going to bribe Gibson's friend to get Gibson to stand down, why kidnap Gibson in front of him? If you are going to kidnap Gibson in front of his friend, why not kidnap or kill the friend? If you are going to irradiate Gibson's daughter, why steal her computer, but not the incriminating milk? If you have irradiated Gibson, why put him in a dark room and have a buffoon technician attend to him? If you have a technician attend to him, are you going to kill him too? If they need to kill the friend of the daughter, why stage a traffic accident and then try to run Gibson down?

How many plot holes works for you, dude? There are plenty more. Somehow Gibson spots the spooks every time. Somehow, Gibson fears for his life, but doesn't close his curtains or keep his gun with him at home. For some reason, the main spook immediately talks to Gibson. For some reason, the bad guys don't get upset that the head spook spills the beans.

The point of the poster was the dialog was hard to understand -- all of it. Lots of people agree. Get over it.

movie was also boring and overrated.

that's something i would label on 'Inception'... that film was genuinely boring for around the last 45minutes-ish of the film (i turned it off with about 30minutes left in the film. the action went on and on :( ). but i did like the first hour and a half or so of it. but due to it being completely boring late into the film i basically turned it off before it even finished.

so it's like this...

Inception, first hour and a half or so = 7.5/10
Inception, last 45minutes or so = 4/10 MAX

overall i gave Inception a 5/10 (i would have went lower but only reason i did not is because i liked the majority of the film). and in all honesty it's one of the worst films i seen in 2010 out of the current 32 films i seen total. because a film being boring is the worst thing a film can be overall.

Edge of Darkness on the other hand is still my #1 film of 2010. i gave it a 9/10. (it's the only film between 2009-2010 that i gave a 9/10 or higher rating to)

p.s. i still need to see The Town which i got high hopes for which ill be seeing in the next 24 hours or so. and i still need to see True Grit which is not out yet. but lacking those two films i think it's likely Edge of Darkness will go down as my favorite film of 2010.

as for my current #2 and #3 films of 2010... 2)Kick-Ass (8/10). 3)The American (8/10).

i also don't hand out 9's and 10's to often either... as out of the 1300-ish total films i seen i only gave a 9/10 or 10/10 ratings out to around 80 films (or less than 100 for sure). which comes out to around 6-7 percent of the total films i seen. so as you can see i don't hand out super high ratings often.

as far as the topic... i never had to much issues with understanding Ray Winstone overall.

You are so right. Forced to turn the volume up to max but still couldn't decipher dialogue.

I thought I was the only one who couldn't hear it at the movies. Finally was able to watch it and cranked the stereo.

I think it's all Guy Ritchie movies for some reason. I thought it was just his films with an all British cast that had "working class" accents, but it seems to be his directing style to make the actors uninitelligible. I could barely understand the American characters much less the Brit. Only watched the first hour though due to the mumbling and after it became apparent that in typical Hollywood cliche fashion for movies of this type, it was a vast right wing conspiracy.

About five minutes in, I turned the subtitles on. That helped a lot.

I too, thought it was just me. Between the mumbling and the incoherent dialogue I couldn't figure out what was going on half the time.

So much of this movie made no sense. What the hell did the boyfriend have to do with any of it and why was he killed? That last conversation with Mel's character was nonsensical. He thought his daughter would be with a scientist. But the boyfriend isn't a grease monkey. He works for the company. So he is a scientist. The boyfriend knows he's in danger but doesn't want to lose his job. With the company that wants him dead. Huh?

The conversation with the cop in the kitchen near the end. Huh? What the hell was it about? So they framed Mel for killing the boyfriend. Um. OK. So what does that have to do with the cop sitting in his kitchen telling him they will frame him? The bad guys know where Mel lives. What do they need the cop for? What? They plan to frame Mel for killing the boyfriend and use that to blackmail the other cop to sit in his kitchen and tell him they were going to frame him anyway so, by the way, they're here to kill you, sorry.

Bad movie.

I struggled too.

As a Brit I could cope with Ray Winstone's accent, with the rest it was simply that the words were mumbled.

reply

no kidding. i can't stand poor sound editing, or in this case, deliberate voice undertone. the only one i could understand perfectly was caterina scorsone, who needs a higher profile in hollywood. she's great, and very attractive in a sublime way. this film was too contrived from the start, the sound problems just made it that much tougher to sit through and enjoy. i gave it 6/10 mainly because huston, winstone and scorsone were all really good in their roles. gibson was fine too, but he exudes too much internal stress as part of his character regime. gibson is best at being gibson, and that's neutral ground for me.

I didn't see this in the theater, but at home on DVD. Thank God for subtitles!
