Robert DeNiro

First off, I want to say, I love this movie. I remember leaving the theater when it was over. Going in, it occurred to me that it was Mel Gibson's first leading role in years. Since Signs, which I loved him in. Well, I wasn't disappointed. When we were leaving, I said to my date, "He's still got it."

Anyway, I was very disappointed when I heard during production of the movie that DeNiro had dropped out. It would have been so awesome to have Mel Gibson and Robert DeNiro, two great actors and film icons, in the same movie. I could have seen DeNiro as Jedburgh. How different do you think the movie would have been? Would you have been for or against DeNiro being in this movie with Mel?

reply

It would have been great. I might have been able to understand what DeNiro was saying.

Yeah. Half the time, I couldn't even understand what Ray Winstone was saying. When I watched the movie on DVD, I put on the subtitles. I can't believe they missed the opportunity of putting Mel Gibson and Robert DeNiro in the same movie.

Nah. DeNiro's great but nowadays he's mostly DeNiro doing DeNiro. If he'd payed Jedburg in Edge of Darkness it would have felt to me to be too much of "hey, look, it's me, the great DeNiro playing this guy next to Mel Gibson and having a good time - aren't I awesome" As it was, Ray Winstone (who is also awesome and who I had no trouble understanding) added serious gravitas to the Jedburg character.
