Will americans get it?

Seeing as its about a guy they've never heard of and about a sport thats not really that big over there.

I'm worried that might hurt the movies chances in award season.

I don't get baseball movies yet they still get made. As long as this is good what does it matter if it's only The Rest of the World that "gets it".

who decides the award nominees are not necessarily the average american movie goers
l'anno scorso a marienbad, indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto
&more recently baader meinhoff complex to name a few - all films with shall we say 'esoteric' genre choices that are not entirely accessible to the average american. they have been nominated for awards
and investigation won the oscar .

I just hope it gets a proper release on this side of the pond!

Anyway, regardless of who or what the film is about, I think the mere combination of screenwriter Peter Morgan (two-time Oscar nominee) and star Michael Sheen (whom many Americans, myself included, still think *should've* been nominated for his work in "The Queen" and/or "Frost/Nixon") ought to be enough to drum up at least some sort of interest in this. :)

I enjoyed Any Given Sunday, even though I don't play, or even fully understand the rules of, American football. I enjoyed Wall Street, even though some of that financial stuff went past me.
A good movie can grip you even if you don't fully "get" the subject matter.

Hopefully a BAFTA will make the acadamy sit up and take note.

I'm American and I get it? The film was made to tell you Clough's story. If you don't understand who he is after seeing it, either the filmmakers have failed at their job or you're really stupid. The filmmakers haven't failed at their job, so obviously it's left to the audience. Americans would get it. Soccer or football, it's the same thing under two different names.

The fact that I hadn't heard of Brian Clough before I was an extra on the film made no difference. I went and saw it tonight knowing very little about the guy, other than he managed Leeds United for 44 days, he's infamous in the football world, and Michael Sheen looks a lot like him (according to fans who were also extras). It made no difference whatsoever. I came out of the film thoroughly entertained and a little bit more knowledgeable about football. Don't count Americans short because we call it soccer. We're intelligent human beings too, and the filmmakers did a great job.

And for the record, Michael Sheen was totally snubbed at the Academy Awards. It was tragic.

Will the sensitive Americans rename it The Darned United?

Some Americans will probably give the film a chance because thet are familiar with the cast and the writer.

with a title like The Damned United, everyone will think its a zombie movie and flock to it anyway! Hope it gets a U.S. release too!!

When the Zombie fans see the Leeds team of the Seventies they'll say "Oh no! Nothing could have prepared us for this horror!"
