ONLY A TRUE SOCCER FAN CAN APPRECIATE

No offence to anyone but only a true scoccer fan appreciate this movie..I'm a Man United fan and it was a joy watching this movie..Loved it

reply

*beep* i hate soccer, and i loved this film, and consider it to be one of the best of the year.

reply

I stand corrected then..U hate soccer?? Try watching the EPL or La Liga..You'll know what the true joy of sports is.

reply

What the Fxxk is "soccer"

reply

I agree with the OP, this move sucks. I mean, it's not that bad, but 7.3 is WAY overrated for this flick with a simple story and not much energy in it. Maybe the "true story" factor weighs in just slightly, but still.. Not above 5.0 imo.

And that comes from someone who at least watches and enjoys some major football games.

reply

Not much energy? A protagonist full of desire and a pace faster than Usain Bolt running to his departing plane and you say there's not much energy? And it's more about the characters and the atmosphere than the story (which is a true story, so it's not that fair to judge it like that).

Football.

reply

I know nothing about baseball, but loved 'Eight Men Out' and 'Cobb'.

reply

That's what makes a truly great sports film; the ability to engage people who have no great interest in the actual sport itself.

As a die hard football fan (not soccer-its football to the rest of the world buddy, not just 'us brits') I would say I probably got a little more out of it than a layperson but the theme of how destructive arrogance and vengeance can be to people and the people around them is universally obvious.

Ditto, considering the movie doesnt revolve around the game itsself, but the people involved, theres no reason someone who dislikes soccer (football for the brits) couldnt like this movie.

nosey little f^cker, arent ya?

I dont think its true that only a true Football fan can really enjoy this film as Football is really incidental to the relationships between the characters, and it's primarily a character driven film. Football really just happens to be the background against which the characters, and the relationships between them, developed.

Clough was a very charismatic man and his (and Taylor's) achievements (Winning league titles with provincial sides - Derby and Forest, and 2 European Cups with Forest) are probably deserving of a film of their own - both are real rags to riches tales of underdogs come from nowhere to conquer. And it happened twice, with the same people.

The Damned United isnt about football. Its about ambition, ego, rivalry (albeit pretty one-sided) and the relationship between Taylor and Clough. I thought the device of making the Revie "snub" of Clough at the cup match in '68 the prime factor in driving Clough all the way to Leeds 6 years later was well done. The subtext being that Clough went to Leeds for all the wrong reasons (ego, jealousy, being rejected by someone he looked up to), which is why he failed. When he cleansed himself of that experience he went on to Forest and achieved greater success than even Revie had at Leeds.
Ive gone off Football a lot over the last 8 or 10 years or so, and i thought it was just a great film.

The indication of how good the FILM is, is that missus loved it and she hates, and has always hated, football.

Really great film.

LOL!

I'm in the States, but my girlfriend's from Yorkshire and she hates football--non-American or any other kind! [Not too loyal to her home, hmmm? ]

I had to drag her out to see it, but she ended up loving it too.

Like everyone says, it's the characters who drive the film. It's not the football that drives the film, but it happens to make for a very good setting.

I was glad my girlfriend was with me--she was able to translate a lot of the northern-England dialogue.

Agreed. More importantly for me, in the moment, I freaking love your sign off. I was having a bad day until I read that. Thanks!!!!

I like to watch.

Bollocks my friend!

I don't even follow football, but I loved this film.

I don't watch baseball or American Football or Ice Hockey, but still LOVE almost every sports related movie.. it's NOT about the game, it's about the people!

You could not be more wrong.

Your posting and its subject line seems to be made in the spirit of tabloides.

This is a fantastic movie about people and relationships, could be any sport in the background.

Of course, that, if you like football, you may enjoy it a bit more.

I had a great time watching it, and will sure watch it again in a few years.

Gotta disagree there.

The themes in this film--competition, resentment, rivalry, revenge, teamwork, friendship--are timeless. They don't have to be set in a sports context, although in this case it seemed perfect.

And Clough is such a great character in and of himself--Sheen is a delight to watch in this role.

I hope he finally gets his (long-overdue) Oscar nom!

I have always disliked football. I tolerate international matches, but thats about it.
Everything about this film was totally BRILLIANT!!!
I grew up during this period and remember alot of the politics in the news, but more, the attention to detail, re the era is a joy to behold.
