I guess, apart from America, the sport which you call 'soccer' is in fact referred to as Football only.

I must say it's the best football film i've seen, i really enjoyed it.

i don't know why americans call they're game football and our game soccer, anytime i watch american football the ball is in the players hands, it should be called handball. there will only ever be 1 football game.

reply

it's really distracting to think about it that way. I mean, you start with traditional football (soccer if youre American). Some people got bored with it and changed the rules around and made rugby/aussie rules football and the like. Fast foreward to early 20th century America and you have a group of people who changed a few rules and made their own game. Hell, Modern Football (American i mean) is very different from Football as it was in the 20s. So really, American football is a spinoff of a spinoff that kept the name.

Also, handball just sounds like a lame game, dont you think?

It's certainly one of the best. I also like "Eleven Men Against Eleven" (1995) starring James Bolam (was that perhaps a tele-movie only?) and "The World Cup: A Captain's Tale" (1982) with Dennis Waterman. The latter may have been "romanticised" for entertainment's sake, but it's still a great yarn. I have copies of both on VHS but would love to see them available on DVD.

And we shouldn't forget "The Miracle Of Bern" (2003) which is also a stirring tale of just how much football means to its fans.

Try to see 'The Golden Vision' a 1960's BBC television drama about Everton supporters and the players they idolise. The drama which filmed in a 'fly on the wall' style is mixed with real match footage and interviews with 'The Golden Vision' himself Alex Young and other Everton players like Ray Wilson.

reply

No, but I like it a lot.

Speaking of the 1960s--what about Richard Harris' breakthrough film, 'This Sporting Life' (1963)?

The main character plays rugby and not football/soccer, but it's excellent.

The film is also set in North Yorkshire.

As you know, the fortunes of war vary. But if you desire a good outcome, you must keep your courage intact.
