I don't think so... the part's small, but that was one of the parts that was cast the earliest. Sarandon probably suggested him since the budget was incredibly small and they couldn't really do major casting for everyone.
The story is an original concept. Feste had written another story while in school and had gone through pre-production several times but was never filmed... supposedly she wrote this one, knowing the script was more likely to get made, to prove herself a director and hopefully allow for the first script to make it through production.
