Who should have played Dixon...

I remember seeing this guy, Charlie Barnett on a guest appearance once on SVU and thinking how much I wish they would have cast him as Dixon. Tristan Wilds is such a pathetically bad actor, and annoyingly boyish. So boyish, in fact, it made it too unbelievable to pair Dixon with anyone beyond Silver in season 1, when Jessica Stroup looked super young. Once the cast started to mature, and Tristan continued to look like a baby (and act like one too) it was just ridiculous seeing him paired with Mekia Cox, Jessica Lowndes.

It would have been amazing to see Naomi/Dixon pairing ala Kelly/Brandon, but that just would have felt stupid with Tristan/AnnaLynne. I had no idea until recently that Charlie and AnnaLynne actually worked together on another show and they look SO cute together. I'm so bummed he was never considered.

I did not think Tristan Wilds was too bad as an actor. However, he was definitely annoyingly boyish as you said that he did not really look good with any of the girls past Silver in Season 1. I mean, by the later seasons, she looked too old for him. However, I just think he is a pathetic character in general and it is way beyond the actual actor. He is literally a token, underused prop with a very undeveloped personality and bad attitude. He was stagnant, boring, and stupid. I doubt the actor had much to do with that and it had more to do with how he was written. He was actually adorable in Season 1. It is unfortunate that he was the youngest of the cast. No one could help he did not age. However, he looks a lot older now(he was on Adele's music video for Hello). It sucks that it took this long.

Yeah I think the character was written as the whiny, childish character we all hate, so Tristan simply portrayed that. Gotta hate him, not the actor. But yes for sure he looked way to boyish for the other cast, later in the series.

I always found it so stupid how they clearly brought him (Dixon, the character) in to have an african american lead, then make him the most stereotypical african american guy ever for a teen show/movie. It just didn't make sense to me

reply

It definitely was the writers way to add a token black character, which sucks because Tristan is a very interesting person himself and deserved for his character to have been written much better. In the end, he was just immature and petty throughout. I mean, he would be so unforgiving and get angry about everyone over anything without taking any responsibility for his actions. He and Silver should have ended up together because then, it would have made sense since they are so much alike. However, as much as I dislike Silver, I hate Dixon more. He was the worst and my least favorite. Considering how annoying most of the characters are, that is saying something.

reply

Yeah I agree. I wish Dixon and Silver would just gotten back together at the end of season 3 or beginning of season 4, moved to NY for college and stayed there - doing a guest appearance in the sesson 4 finale, and in the series finale. We would have been better off as both their characters just got to the point of unbarable. I mean Dixon in his wheelchair must have been the most infuriation storyline of the show. What a WHINY little boy. And can we seriously take a break and think about the fact that Dixon had a record label at age 20? A RECORD LABEL!! And he didn't even complain about not making money, which is even more stupid. At that age he's
lucky to be an intern at one

Well, there is so many problems about this show that even other teen dramas do better and are more clear about but you are the one who I respond to on Gossip Girl forums, right? It seems that every show does that when the characters are "college" age. I mean, Chuck with his hotel and running Bass Industries. They could have at least made it seem like he had a trust fund that Lily just had to hold for him until he can prove he is responsible enough or Nate running the Spectator, even though he is the biggest idiot of the show. Sorry, off 90210 topic. We will discuss it more on Gossip Girl forums, lol

Ridiculous adult/college storylines: Liam is a movie star, Dixon has a record label, Annie is a best selling author, Naomi is a big shot event planner, Silver hangs around Beverly Hills with zero dollars lol, Navid owns Shirazi Studios at 17 and continues to run it. I mean, I wish I was that lucky!

Ridiculous soap opera moments: Liam being kidnapped by his "bodyguard", Vanessa stalking him, Dixon survives a car accident where in real life would have died and yet we are supposed to believe he is the only one who survived of the four people? Him being in a wheelchair, then recovering. Annie being a prostitute, Silver being an assistant to a political figure, Naomi being raped yet it never being mentioned EVER AGAIN and she seems to have no real post rape psychological trauma or issue, okay! Her marrying and divorcing QUICK, her owning that beautiful house in her trust fund. Adrianna redeeming herself after a few months in Africa after SWITCHING HER FRIENDS PILLS?
Damn, this show is even more unrealistic when you write everything down, lol

Oh and Adrianna being a big star yet no one she runs into even knows who she is. How big was she? How did she become famous from a Youtube video? I do not see Rebecca Black with a successful music career. I do not think the show grasps how fame works. I mean, they should have at least made her win a singing show and actually be consistent in the fact that she is FAMOUS. So many people act like she is just a normal person. She is only famous when they decide she is yet it seems like she is only semi well known in Beverly Hills and in some places internationally(like when Austin took her to Vegas and Carly Rae Jepsen asked her "YOUR Adrianna Tate Duncan, RIGHT?" So, she is not famous enough for people to know for sure who she is where they do not have to actually confirm it with her? Okay.

Haha this totally made me laugh! Its not smart to write all this down because you see how ridiculous it really is :P S 4 and 5 were truly insane. Like twilight zone

reply

Yeah sorry, it was a lot. A true waste of time considering all teen drama shows have unrealistic stories and character development. So, who is your favorite character? I actually do not like any one of them.

I know people hate Adrianna but I can not take Season 3 seriously enough because I feel like I am watching a Disney Channel portrayal of a girl who has become snobby. So, I just skip that part. It seems that they change who her character is every season. On most of the teen dramas, they develop the character backwards to people who they never would be when you consider the beginning. However, on this show, it has that same problem AND the new show runner who changed Season 2 changed every single character and did a 180 on them. Adrianna though is the only character that did not grow backwards or forwards. She literally did a 180 all the time. She was powerful strong and sassy in the first season, ditsy and girly but weirdly sweet in the second, paranoid, crazy, wild, fame obsessed, and prissy in the third season (and became a bitch again), quiet, helpful, regretful, and lonely in the fourth, then wild, ditsy, bitchy, whiny, and superficial in the fifth(she basically became a robot this season kind of like Naomi did). The only time her personality paralleled in two seasons is Season 3 and 5, although she was much tolerable in the latter. She is the only one I am not sure if I am supposed to like or not because I feel she gets the short end of the stick or is NEVER the same person. At least when they other characters changed Season 2 and onwards, you see the progression to that point(or shall I saw regression since the writers clearly do not know anything about character development).

Sorry again for the long rant. It just really bothers me. Other shows always regress the characters but this is beyond headache inducing.

Again, I agree with everything you wrote. My favorite characters are Naomi and Annie. Overall I think they have the better stories and character development. I actually did like the escort storyline for Annie, as it was so scandalous for her character, but at the same time it was pretty ridiculous considering she does have two parents she didn't even ask for help before she got into it, and her dating Patrick was just gross. Hate season 1 Annie up until the season finale.

I love Naomi because she changes so much during the course of the show, and she is hilarious. That being said, S 4-5 Naomi was more of a caricature of her former self, with no signs of any sexual abuse. I would like to see Naomi deal more with that in a realistic way, which I think would make great stories. She already did it good in S3 so I wish they kept that up. Like instead of going into event planning, she should have gone into charity work for sexual abuse victims - THAT would make her character so much better. Ending with I also love their fashion (most of the time)

Thoughts?

reply

Yeah, I started to really love Annie too after Season 1 was over(the actress could not get anymore annoying with her portrayal).

I do not like Naomi only because she had no repercussions for what she did to Annie. The season finale of Season 1 was a very hard case of bullying and it did not stop there with the naked picture. Her apology made me want to smack her, only because it felt like she was apologizing for accidentally forgetting her birthday or something. Other than that, she is far more likable than others on the show, so I get it. Plus, she is the only one who has anything interesting to say most of the time.

All of the careers that these kinds of show take the route of the character is unrealistic. It's like "she planned parties, make her an event planner" Okay? So it has nothing to do with her being rich and popular, good to know.

Yeah, I think that would be good but she could not make a career out of it. She could definitely be very focused on that when she was at college. I just wish she was a little stuck on it during her university experience and they planned out a storyline where Naomi makes a self discovery and realizes her talents. One thing I have liked about her character is that she is three dimensional and not very ditsy(okay, she has her moments sometimes but most of the time, she is very intelligent). She to me is one of the smartest people on the entire show. She always knows whats up and she is the only one blunt to tell the truth when everyone else is not seeing it or beating around the bush. She definitely deserves something a lot stronger as a career that matches her level of intelligence.

I actually never realized that every Dixon relationship felt very juvenile and immature. It felt like he was stuck in junior high romance mode and dragged all the other girls down with him. Silver had much more mature relationships with both Navid and Teddy, Ivy graduated onto Raj, which was a much better choice, and Adrianna and him, as much chemistry as they had, were really stupid together most of the time. I do not know how they both dropped the love word on each other. There is no way Dixon was in love with any of the girls he was with.

So poster, it was just not just his looks. It was his entire personality.
