In the bar scene, his friend got into a fight with two guys, his friend hit one and was about to get hit by the second guy when Joey knocked him out causing him to fall on the girl behind him, crushing her (at least that's how it appears since she is under the other guys body).

Yeah, that was a little soft on the writing there. It wss a bar, and the father needs to seriously rethink his parenting skills. It was also late at night, as the crowded bar was full of buzzed adults on the make (not the usual depressed alcoholics who can't wait for reduced price drinks at Happy Hour and will skip dinner because they 'get their calories from the booze!' that one finds in bars during the daytime. At least, that's what I hear.;-))
It seemed like they needed to make Joey sympathetic, and killing a little girl with drunk driving wouldn't do it. But, defending a friend and accidentally killing a little girl who shouldn't have even been there would do it.
I did like this movie, a nice story about a guy who made a mistake and regrets it. A big heart, and he wanted to help a kid. A nice change from the big studio movies with unlikable characters and special effects.
I didn't get that part. The little girl died because someone fell on her? That seems unlikely.
I have a new philosophy. I'm only going to dread one day at a time.
Charlie Goose: Unlikely but not impossible. I read this story about this "peace activist" who put a young musician in a coma. The "peace activist" was being rude and fresh with the musicians girlfriend, the musician came to her defense and the "pace lover" punched him knocking him out.
The musician ended up in a coma. Why? Because when he fell he smacked his head against the pavement so hard it caused him severe damage. There are other stories of people fighting and falling down and getting up, but sometimes its more tragic to others like with the musician and the little girl.
C.S. Wood: Its a neighborhood restaurant, I grew up/live in a place like this. Neighborhood restaurants that serve food and alcohol are not uncommon or against the law.
