When the young black seaman (Wills?) hooks up with the young Australian girl and has regrets afterwards, are we to presume that she was a prostitute?

It could go either way. In my experience, in Western Australia it is easy to find both the pros and the non-pros. The running gag is that when you pull into Perth, there are girls waiting on the pier for sailors. None of my visits did I ever see girls waiting on the pier. There are brothels all over the place there. Most of them are not under 25 nor are they Aussies though. Having said that going to brothels in Perth is a rookie mistake and waste of money. Considering the bars and clubs are crawling with Aussie girls that love Americans.

No, you are not. If it was a guy hooking up with a female sailor would you presume he was a prostitute or just a young guy looking for action? Girls like action, too.
