The Sirens

Anyone want to take a shot at explaining the sirens?

I am guessing they are motorcades of European Union diplomats ... which Slovenia had just joined. More so I am pretty sure that the man that died was also tied to the EU diplomatic corps. Thus the constantly occurring motorcades (sirens) are a constant reminder of the fact that she has a big problem hanging over her head.

More so Slovenia's membership in EU is a nod to change from old Yugoslavia to new Slovenia ... which she parallels. She goes from small time girl from a small time Yugo town to urban call girl in modern Slovenian city ... learning English.

The sirens are a reminder that the road to change ... that she and Slovenia are going down ... is filled with danger.
