critics of this film

check out the posts of most of the people who didn't like this film...then think about the memorial film that robert made that was rejected and the new version that was shown to the students. robert's film was very raw and minimal but much more powerful than the new version...the students were shown the new version that contained superficial and shallow comments about the twins set to music. the people who are so harshly putting Afterschool down are much like the students who all clap at the end of the new version of the memorial film. most people would agree with them too...audiences prefer superficial and shallow movies for the most part. when they see a film like Afterschool, their reaction is much like the the schoolmaster who views robert's version: "Is there something wrong with you? I'm very dissapointed". it's just a good thing that there are still people who make movies that are not carbon copies of the movies that most people want to see...otherwise, every trip to the movie theatre would be just like the lame memorial ceremony at robert's school..."Okay, now everyone make their way to third period class." now everyone make thier way to the latest romantic comedy...we promise it won't confuse you or make you angry or disturbed in any way. we absolutely promise it won't make you think.

What was so "different" about this film? There are plenty of movies that are evocative and make you think. What makes this one so much better?

reply

didn't say it was so much better or different than any other evocative movie that makes you think. i just think it belongs in that category. plenty of movies are better than this, plenty are not as good...but i would rather watch any of them that are unique in some way than most of the crap that's out there. don't get me wrong, i am sometimes in the mood for a movie that is like a million other movies and was just made for the sake of entertainment, but i don't appreciate it half as much as something that stands out from the crowd. my point in writing that post was just about the negative reactions people have to movies they are not used to. i just think it would be a much more boring world if all movies followed the same tired formulas.

Hey, I love a movie that is deep and makes you think. Unfortunately, this was not one of those kinds of films. It was long, boring, and definitely not deep.
