It was a shattered planet. Many of us in the resistance community believe the chimera used their towers to transport the Earth into their galaxy, which explains all of the planets laying their broken.
sharewell it did look like a shattered planet to me to, however, in one of the intels that mentioned the technology of a large weapon that the chimera were trying to reconstruct, the image of the spherical object looked alot like the one in the end scene. i could be wrong. besides if the the earth was also shattered i dont think they would have able to stand still on the ground.
i could be wrong but i gotta admit, it did look really surreal!

I was thinking what you were, except that the Chimera were using the towers to bring the Chimeran planet to Earth, not vice versa.
