Splicer origins?

after first entering chicago and fighting grims (i like to call them zombies just because thats my first impression of them) you get the first splicer in the game. i like to think that the weapon was made by some guy who knew his way around a home depot. i would love some side stories would be made with the grims being the main form of invasion. being a big zombie fan i would buy it.
