Movie needed a better comedian at the helm
If this was the 80's it would have gone to somebody like a Chevy Chase or Steve Martin. But unfortunately we're in the era of mediocrity so it went to Kevin James, who just isn't particularly funny.

shareI like James. He's much less insufferable than Sandler and others of his ilk. Weirdly, I can picture Steve Martin in this role, despite not being a big fan. Why do they never cast proper actors in these kinds of roles? That's often what I think when I see one of these big, brash comedian vehicles. A quality actor could have a real riot with this. May even make it watchable.

I thought that Kevin James played the kindly zookeeper well. I have the feeling that another comedian wouldn't have quite got the animal empathy thing so nailed on as James does in this.
