Movie needed a better comedian at the helm

If this was the 80's it would have gone to somebody like a Chevy Chase or Steve Martin. But unfortunately we're in the era of mediocrity so it went to Kevin James, who just isn't particularly funny.

I like James. He's much less insufferable than Sandler and others of his ilk. Weirdly, I can picture Steve Martin in this role, despite not being a big fan. Why do they never cast proper actors in these kinds of roles? That's often what I think when I see one of these big, brash comedian vehicles. A quality actor could have a real riot with this. May even make it watchable.

There are two kinds of people in the world, those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

I thought that Kevin James played the kindly zookeeper well. I have the feeling that another comedian wouldn't have quite got the animal empathy thing so nailed on as James does in this.
