No big name co-stars...again?

I wonder why Halle hardly ever has A-list co-stars. It would help to raise the caliber & profile of her movies. Hopefully, this will turn out well anyway.

Stellan SkarsgÄrd is A-list actor. With big parts in movies like Breaking the Waves, The Hunt for Red October, Ronin, Good Will Hunting, Pirates of the Caribbean and Mamma Mia!.

If I remember correctly, Sandra Bullock has rarely worked with so-called A list actors, yet she won an Oscar while her co-star was an unknown kid and a hugely successful and famous country singer, who is certainly not known as a A list actor...
And if it helps you, Halle's next film is Cloud Atlas, with Tom Hanks, and it looks likely that film will also include Natalie Portman. And, Ian McKellan and James McAvoy have been approached ....can it get more A-lister for ya? And film is helmed by the Wachowski's (no longer called the Wachowski Brothers)...are they A list enough?

Anybody see the Robert Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep film of two years ago go completely in the dump? The whole A lister thing is relevant only if its a hit, if its not a hit, what does being an A lister mean anyway?

What? "Hardly ever"? The last movie she was in also had Benicio Del Toro and David Duchovny in it. The movie before that had Bruce Willis. Before that was X-Men:The Last Stand with plenty of well-known actors.

reply

Ummm..... Chandra Wilson and Phylicia Rashad are very famous. Wilson is on Grey's Anatomy and Rashad is Mrs. Huxtable!!

I think casualcritic is referring to leading men that are box-office stars like, Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, etc. U know the ones who get good press about their films. I think Bernicio and Bruce had there time in the sun and it has gone down. The women u mentioned are TV stars and were support actors.

No big name stars...again? I wonder what they would think of you calling them no names.

She was a BOND girl. Can't get a more famous costar than James Bond.

reply

I would rather have great actors than movie stars. Stellan is a great actor. Who cares if he's not super famous.

reply

Maybe the budget. Do you need another big name really, how much will it add to ticket sales. Sticking to only one $10M - $20M star probably gets this done under $50M, add a Will Smith and your probably in the $75 - $100m range, which would equal a money loss for a drama probably.

Edit

Halle is also producing, so she is likely keeping costs down, her salary is probably tied to boxoffice returns. And she doesn't like to share the spotlight...lol.

reply

Maybe because she is considered a big enough name to carry the film herself.

The OP's questions was legitimate. The is a huge difference between being a respect actor or a tv actor and being an A-list film actor.

At the end of the day, white mother or not, Halle Berry is a black actress and roles/options are limited for black actresses. Her lighter skin and thinner features along with the much talked about fact that her mother is white has helped give her more opportunities than other black actresses. However, they still pale in comparison to white actresses of her generation.

I disagree...why would an A-list star want to play a supporting role to an actress who is not on the A-list? It just wouldn't make any sense for his career.

reply

How would she know it's because of her race? Did they tell her? Or maybe they just don't think much of her as an actress/person or just don't want to work with her? I'm sure that never crossed her mind! "It's cos I is black": as Ali G used to say.

reply

When you are an A-list actor/actress, you can stand alone on carrying a movie without having to depend on other A-list actors with you in each movie. It is part of what makes you an A-lister along with blockbuster movies and Academy Awards.

im honestly asking, what does it matter? Are you asking only in terms of how much money this will make or what?

for some reason I kill threads : /
