Curse of Over-the-Top Southern American Accent

American Southern accents are deceptively complex and complicated accents. They are so deceptive, you get the impression they are easy to do. When you hear them and realize how few actors can actually do them, you cringe. The minute I hear a bad attempt, it ruins the scene because I can't think of much else. Most attempts are bad because actors don't seem to want to lower and simmer it.

Who has an over the top Southern Accent in this film? Just to be clear, isn't that one of her personalities or does the main character have one as well?

Rest in Peace, Teena Marie. You will be missed.

reply

The Southern accent I heard from Halle Berry in the clip was almost laughable. I'm a Southerner, by the way.

reply

Ok, well my point is, it's her idea of a Southern accent right? So it wouldn't necessarily be accurate. I'm also Southern.

Rest in Peace, Teena Marie. You will be missed.

reply

a realistic southern accent is very hard to replicate, unless you are a southerner yourself. not many actors are able to pull it off. There is the drawl, the syllable accents, and the rhythm to it.

reply

Which southern voice is very important as Frankie and Alice each have a distinct voice.

reply

Southerners have a drawl.

Southerners in movies have a ddddddddddrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllllll.

Have you ever watched ciaran hinds in the show Political Animals?
Good Lord.

reply

Halle Berrys southern accent was grotesque, a caricature of a real one.

reply

Still haven't seen this movie but what I was trying to say is, wasn't it the point of the character for her to be faking an accent? Not that it was actually supposed to be an accurate portrayal but what the character thought a southerner was supposed to sound like?

Rest in Peace Geoffrey Holder, you will be greatly missed.

Well I am not sure about this movie. But I can think of one show on TV I cannot look at because of the bad southern accent. The Closer. And I am from NY and I also cringe when people do so called NY Accents. People in the Bronx and the city talk different the the people in Brooklyn, But for some reason the New York accent is always the Brooklyn accent.

reply

I can relate. I am from the South and everyone sounds different. We all don't sound like the characters in Gone with the Wind! lol. There are "southern" accents and "redneck" accents.. haha.. not to be disrespectful.. some of my family members sound way more "southern" and "backwoods" then I do.. My father is from new york so some of the words I say sound more like his accent though I still have a "drawl" to my sentences. I hate it when actors portray that stereotypical accent - by the way- usually something "southern" that I have never heard in my life! It's like "why do you think we sound that way?" and some of us really can speak without the "ya'll" thrown in and can pronounce our words correctly and still have an accent.. lol.. no offence ;)

Like I said, my dad is from new york and sounds nothing like the "brooklyn" new york accent or heaven forbid the "jersey shore" sound that for some reason always comes up in movies. His entire family sounds nothing like the stereotypical new yorker..

reply

Congratulations! And I have family w/ different accents too.But we are not watching your family or mine on the Screen. These posts here on IMDB are about Movies, and the way the characters speak in MOVIES, Halle Berry and this one in particular. Would you please address the question---?
Thanks.

reply

The accents are distinct enough for me to know which personality is talking. That's good enough for me, and I dare say, most people.

reply

Right on. She sounded similar enough to every Southerner I've ever been in contact with. More than adequate to get the point across as far as I'm concerned.

reply

if Halle's accent is bad it's because she is guilty of being a lazy actress in this respect. a decent dialect coach could have brought her up to snuff. she didn't take time to learn the correct african dialect for storm. all of her so-called "inner city" hood type characters sound the same and don't sound like anyone i've ever heard in the hood. you take just about any british actor/actress and they can nail an american dialect. halle needs to take some of that revlon money and hire herself someone who can help her speak on film.
seriously. an oscar does not eliminate the need to further develop one's skills.

As I am French, I am not at all an expert when it comes to accents of your native language... but, as Alice is actually Frankie (or one of her personnalities), why would Frankie be able to master a perfect southern accent? Isn't it quite accurate that she just alters her own accent by taking an cliché idea of a southern accent like any non trained person would?
I had the impression to hear someone mimicking Gone with the Wind, and it seemed quite right given the situation.
Or did I miss something?

reply

She's mimmicking the accent of her lover's sister (the bride). I think it's silly to complain about how accurate the accent is given the fact that it's an alternate personality and not a REAL Southern character!

Exactly what I was thinking. Great point!

Yeah there are several different accents in the south, like there are different accents in different regions of a country. Even within regions there are different accents in different areas of those regions. It's just funny when actors adopt what it seems to me that they think is the southern "aristocratic" accent and then just apply it to all of the south as "the southern accent." I actually haven't seen this movie, though, and I just checked out the comments to see what the deal was on it since it was listed as a new movie at Redbox. But I clicked your thread because it looked interesting.

Southern accents are disgusting. Unless theyre Blanche Devereaux....

reply

The thing is with accents, they may cause distress to those who actually own them, but to other viewers they just slide on by as part of the story. I am an Australian. We have a pretty awful accent and anyone who is not Aussie really cannot replicate it. But for me, USA accents, good or bad, don't interfere with the overall story. Americans are severe on actors if they do not get it spot on.

reply

I love Australian accents! (I do agree that it would be difficult to replicate.)

I thought Alice's exaggerated Southern drawl was intentional.... I mean, she was an alter of Frankie who did not have an accent so, OFC it sounded 'affected', because it was!

reply

I also assumed it was intentional because the only personality that had one was Alice.

reply

Oh and also, Alice's personality was a sort of haughty, Southern Belle, so it seems almost "expected" that she'd have this over the top accent. She was, putting on airs, as they say.
