Chinese dubbing during the first part of the film...

Is it just me, or was quite a lot of the dialogue in the first part of the film dubbed? I don't speak or understand Chinese, but it definitely looked like it had been dubbed, which was very annoying.

Does anyone know the reason for this? I know that the differing Chinese accents are sometimes a problem in Chinese productions (such as all the different accents in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), but it seems pretty drastic to resort to dubbing! Even for someone like me who doesn't understand Chinese and probably wouldn't hear the difference anyway, it was visually very distracting...

Anyone?

Depending on what version you've got. There are two sound tracks, one for Mandarin, and the other Cantonese. And the matter of the fact is that the actors themselves spoke different dialect during filming. Some spoke Mandarin, like Siu-Wong Fan (Jin Shanzhao), and some spoke Cantonese, like Donnie Yen (Ip Man). So you got dubbing either way.

Fan Siu-Wong spoke Cantonese. He was completely dubbed into Mandarin because his character is a Northerner.

I agree with OP.

The first scene with the "play fighting" at IP's house... I have the DVD and you can switch to Mandarin or Cantonese speaking, but either setting when you hear them talk doesnt match with their lip movement... it was annoying.. but once I settled on Cantonese, the rest of the movie seems more correct their natural language and lip movement...
