Hands down one of the best martial arts films i've seen...

just saw it over the weekend.... and it was pretty damn good...

as far as i could tell it was all realistic fighting, no BS trick moves on wires and whatnot...

the story was solid and compelling and was a self-defense tale as opposed to the cliche revenge story

donnie yen gave an amazing performance

it has some of the best cinematography and "fight-filming" that i've seen in a long time... its nice to actually be able to watch the fight as opposed to seeing nothing but cluttered body parts like in Batman Begins

lastly, and what really sold me, was the fact that the fights are integral to the plot and each one advances the plot... as opposed to being just random fight scenes thrown in for eye-candy's sake...

I really, really, really liked this movie a lot. Everything about this flick kicked ass! Definitely the martial arts flick of the year if not the decade!Thumbs Up baby!

I've read complaints about the ending being too weak or what not, but I disagree. The filmmakers spend the entire film building up Ip Man as the best fighter of all. It would be a big time cliche to all of a sudden have him struggle against Gen. Muira and make a miraculous Rocky-like comeback.

Oh, I didn't like the ending of the movie, but I liked the end-fight a lot-- I still can't get over all the combos Ip Man was throwing out.

A lot of people are just disappointed with the level of violence or gore (expected from the "old" Donnie Yen)-- but I loved the fact that Ip Man is always struggling to stay calm and focused when he fights, instead of "letting it rip" ("Arrgh, I am Sparta/Wolverine/Badass/ etc.!")... to the point that he always manages to avoid a killing blow.

As Donnie Yen frequently points out, real fighters don't try to "make faces" when they fight-- they focus on the fight.

what is it about the ending that ppl don't like?

i found it to be quite well-suited

Your art is the prettiest art of all the art.

it doesnt need any mention of bruce lee. sure the trailer needed it to sell it. but it doesnt have to be mentioned at the end.

It's usually either the "action-skipping" slo-mo mob sequence or the "event-skipping" slide-show summary sequence, or both.

Not to be confused with people who didn't like the end-fight-- instead of the General putting up a good fight, it had Ip Man pulling his punches.

i just got done seeing it for the first time a few moments ago and i pretty much agree with what the original poster said.

as ill quote him here and i pretty much totally agree with...

it has some of the best cinematography and "fight-filming" that i've seen in a long time... its nice to actually be able to watch the fight as opposed to seeing nothing but cluttered body parts like in Batman Begins

... and not to mention just about any other mainstream action film with fighting as it's sad that most of the stuff out there edits around the fighters almost to the point you cant really appreciate a good percentage of the fighting in other mainstream films. ;)

so i guess in a way you can sorta sum up stuff like this...

A) Quality Fight Scenes (like you see in Ip Man ;) )
B) Decent Fight Scenes (edit's somewhat quick around people but nothing extreme to the point it totally ruins it. a moderate amount of films fall into this category.)
C) Horrible Fight Scenes (edit's so fast from camera angle to angle that it totally takes you out of the scene and you can't enjoy it. a moderate amount of films fall into this category. i think a perfect example of this is 'some' of the stuff in 2008's 'Quantum of Solace' :( )

the gap between B and C seems to be fairly thin but if properly done, B can be quite a bit more enjoyable than C which usually boils down to keeping the camera angle from changing to rapidly which usually means slowing the camera angle changes JUST A BIT longer than C. but there ain't to many films that fall into category A, sadly :(

but my only real complaint about the film which ended up dulling it down some for me is that the Subtitles seem to cycle pretty quick at times to the point it's almost impossible to read everything without pausing it etc :( ... but that aside, the film was pretty good and i guess i could read enough to get the basic point across although i am sure i missed some more important stuff from time to time in the film.

but as is... i give it a 7/10. had the subtitles not been a issue like most other films i had seen with subtitles, which i can generally keep up with reading, i would have most likely gave it a 8/10. but overall it was still a enjoyable film and Donnie Yen was solid as the lead actor in the film and as said before the fight scenes where pretty nice as you could clearly see they where a step above your typical Hollywood film as you could actually appreciate the fighting quite a bit unlike some Hollywood films that CUT around a person like lighting (at times) to hide the fact that the fighting would be otherwise horrible had it been anything like we had seen in this film where they don't cut from scene to scene within a faction of a second as it holds the camera angles noticeably longer than usual, which is a good thing, and it was a well made film ;)
