why do people hate it?

do people not like it because there young? so far im enjoying both episodes seams fast pacing hope a lot more Acton than the spooks its self new rules might make it a bit grittier and ruthless. think there trying to widing the audience, to a younger demographic. my younger brothers never really like spooks but really enjoy this.

I think it's fair to say that people mostly hate it because of the Spooks connection. If it were a new sci-fi drama that had no connection to what is widely regarded as one of the best dramas the BBC has produced since the turn of the century then I think most people would let it be and give it more of a chance than they have.

So I guess what I'm saying is that it's really more 'comparative' hate than "oh my god worst thing ever" hate...

At least that's what I feel. In all honesty, I think the idea of a future-set, post-disaster version of Spooks is an intriguing concept, but there are just too many problems within the set-up. I've got no problems with the majority of the cast being young, but I think it would be more credible if they had someone senior leading them (a 'Giles' to their 'Buffy', so to speak). And if the reason for MI5 hiring so young is "Because there's no one left", then that too would make the set-up more credible. Similarly, there isn't any real threat from the outside world. In the first episode they had a dim-witted northerner who looked like he was about 12-years old and wouldn't have two brain cells to rub together, and yet we're supposed to believe that he can broker a deal between one of the world's most ruthless mercenaries (himself a 15-year old hoodie with a hamburger fetish) and some shadowy government conspiracy (led by Rafe from The Apprentice)?

That's the central problem I find with this show, a complete lack of credibility...

i agree the story regarding threats may need some work lol but i like idea with no senior leading, if they do it right it will lead to charcter development lets hope the cast lives long enough for that to happen, i sort of predicted hannah would die and Charlie would replace her.

reply

I think people hate it because it really is poor. Very contrived. It is geared towards early teens I think. All very PC and ethnically diverse with actors straight out of Stage School trying to make a name for themselves. I am afraid I gave it only 30 mins before I switched off, deleted both episodes from my PVR and deleted the timer that was due to record 10 or so more episodes.

reply

It doesn't feel very satisfying at all to watch, populated as it is by smug young actors who were cast for their looks. The direction is way too soft, with real emotion avoided in favour of sly smiles, fifty yard stares and cliché. They come across as good looking young actors, not as the characters they are portraying. Unfortunately, for all of the shaky close-ups, filming through windows and lingering shots of eyes, the overall approach is way too timid to make this anything other than a kid's show on late at night.

Having just watched the 3rd episode, I'm beginning to warm to Code 9. I agree the first two episodes were pretty weak for an intro into a new show - especially a spin off to something like Spooks. Personally, I think the first episode should have dealt more with the nuclear attack and the recruitment of the new agents.

To be honest, I probably spent too much time comparing Code 9 to Spooks for the first two episodes, rather than just sitting back and watching this show for what it is - a fairly decent attempt to make a programme that isn't Celebrity something-or-other.

Ok, so it has it's faults, but I can think of worse ways to spend 50 minutes on a Sunday night. I think that as the show gets into it's stride things will keep on getting better.

reply

I quite like this show.
Although, I never did get in to Spooks.

reply

People hate it because it's cheesy crap, it's a complete joke and to affiliate it with Spooks is an insult to the series.

reply

Well they could always remove the bad language edit the violence and show it on CBeebies where the 8 year olds would love it, this show sucks lets hope Spooks makes a welcome return.

reply

May I suggest how to improve this
1 A giant toilet
2 Then flush the scrips down it.
3 Run don't walk run away with out looking back.

reply

And replace the script with bonekickers!!!!

One is a little concerned when one of the leading actresses(Georgia Moffet) come out withe statement, after mentioning London was wiped out by a nuclear bomb, "We've seen it happen in loads of countries on smaller scales and larger scales," What other country has had the capital city wiped out by a nuclear bomb whether on a large or small scale? How many sandwiches is she short of the picnic?

What are the producers telling the actors to promote this crap.

So what about Skins then?! That was a pile of poo. The characters were interesting but the plot was held together with a good sound track and lines of coke.

At least the BBC are presenting young people in a position of power, rather than abusing drugs and shagging each other like the people of Corinth.

I'm 23, and a dude saying this lol

I don't think it's that bad. Considering its a BBC, British programme. But then again I like 'contrived' programmes like Alias and 24 too...

Sorry peeps but I actually like it :D

You shouldn't appologise for liking it. In fact, you should probably call the BBC (reverse charges of course, they're a public service broadcaster, the British public will pay the bill) they'll probably offer you a cushy job and sack a few more staff. As long as you can keep nodding, you'll do great.

I agree that Skins held nothing in common for it's target audience. Then again, it was on so late at night, you wonder who they were aiming attractive teens dancing semi-clad at. Still, there's a new series on it's way I hear.

reply

nah Channel for is where I'm aiming for. They can say what they want. The queen doesn't really interest me. Although I do admire the BBC, even if they are far from perfect.

I was thinking of saying to the BBC I like it, cause most on here seem to hate it lol

I'm a youth worker (and former Media student...yes I know lol...) all the 15 and 16 year olds at my church are obsessed with Skins. So even if it is for the student age group...it is appealing to people who are far too young for crack...

:D

Interesting to note that Channel 4 is also a public service provider, though not public funded, but certainly non-profit and working to a remit.

Good to hear that they are attracting their target audience from your experience though. Keep up the good work.

reply

Because there all a bunch of idiots!!

Theres nothing wrong with the script, the pace, the youthfulness or anything!!
Im not a young teenager and i enjoy both Spooks and the spin-off
Theres no good saying its too young, the scripts rubbish - lets see any of you lot produce a show like this!

They have some real trash on BBC three but this show isn't part of that group!

reply

And also most of the writers also write the actual Spooks
So you can hardly slag off the script but admit you watch the other show?!

reply

The fact that no-one on this board could produce a TV show is no measure of how good this is. I could not build an LCD TV from scratch, but it doesn't mean I can't tell a better picture on one from another.

Also, something can be written by the same writers and still not be as good.

reply

Well, never having seen a single episode of Spooks - and I doubt I ever will after seeing this - the problem isn't comparison: it's that this is just infantile crap. It's badly made, with extremely cliched scripts that are dumbed down way below the lowest common denominator and a tired visual style that someone at the BBC probably thinks is "down with the kids." There's no discernible characterisation, no real plotting, no real menace. Every scene simply explains the plot in bland, simplistic terms making the story as uninteresting and undemanding as possible. There's not even any real detection - all they have to do is ask a question and someone instantly knows the answer, often thanks to the internet.

If anything it reminded me of another dire spinoff, the 80s Dr Who one-off K9 and Company. The same sense of talking down to the audience, playing everything very Enid Blyton (SC9 is basically Blyton's Famous Five updated) and badly copying bits from other current hits in the hope that some of their magic will rub off.

I couldn't agree with you more. They appear to have totally underestimated their audiences intelligence.

I liked it :) I liked Spooks too but this was much easier to understand. My Dad was always complaining that Code 9 wasn't realistic but I don't care cos I enjoyed it! Charlie Green was soooooo hot too :)

I think it's a general problem with TV executives that they think people in the 18-24 age group only watch programs that feature people in their demographic. Look at the (overall) cast for Spooks: Code 9, where the nuclear bomb didn't just kill off half the population of London, but anybody over the age of 30 as well...

Take the episode where the bank is held hostage (can't remember which episode it was), where you have one of the bank's owners say to his 15 year old terrorist "Wake up, little girl". Now I might be more inclined to accept that line if it were spoken by a middle-aged man, but it was delivered (badly) by some guy who looked like he'd only just graduated from university himself.

Where have all the adults gone?

Another gripe I have is the complete lack of motivation for the shadowy conspirators to blow up half the country. It was continually established that they weren't religious fundamentalists, but rogue operatives from within Mi5. Okay, so that's the 'who' and the 'how', but where is the 'why'? Why do they want to set off two nuclear bombs?

It's never explained, so - in the end - we don't care.

Oh, and to whoever it was who said they didn't want to see the original Spooks because of this show, you're missing out on a treat, mate. It's much more involving (and intelligent) that this tripe, especially the earlier series...

That'd be me. You've got to admit, this is the worst publicity the original show could have.

"You've got to admit, this is the worst publicity the original show could have."

Exactly! The original spooks is one trillion times better than this. I implore all those who have not yet seen the original spooks, but somehow managed to find themselves watching this vile tripe to give the original a try.

How did she(Jodi) get the audio and video of Bette...was she wearing a camera in her forehead?

reply

I think Code 9 is better than the original, I just find it easier to watch and it's got nothing to do with the cast being young. In most of the shows I watch the main cast are old enough to be my parents.

I dont get why people think its so far fetched that MI5 would recruit younger people to deal with younger terrorists. Its not like the whole company are under 25, its only a handful of them. Young terrorists aren't so impossible either, other countries have suicide bombers that are barely into their teens so its not exactly impossible for it to happen here.

reply

'Hope a lot more Acton'? No, mate, it's set in Manchester because there was a nuclear bomb blast in London so Acton won't feature in it.
