200 billion spent and no basic psych test?

so as the show states- the company spent 200 Billion (with a B) on this project and they never thought to give a basic psych test to the candidates?

Every single one of these characters has deep psychological issues and all exhibit addiction tendencies. look how much they freaked out at the table when the psychologist suggested they not use the VR system until it could be overhauled.

another poster stated the same thing i thought- what? they dont have books? movies? games?

and dont tell me the company did it 'for ratings'
there is never anyway they could remotely get their money back through a tv show. sponsors and selling ad time.

about a year and a half in i predict one goes batsh!t crazy like the guy in Event Horizon and picks off the rest of the crew.

since this was all they ever produced they should have put text up on the screen at the end:

'None of the crew of Phaeton made it to Epsilon Eridani alive.'

This is always one of my biggest problems with this genre. Same exact issue with "Red Planet". The astronauts on these supposedly milestone missions are always bonkers! WHY?! Look at those guys in Apollo 13, they had ice running thru their veins (almost literally). They were dedicated and resolute, but they still had personality. That's what a real astronaut looks like. There is an art to treading that fine line.

I don't like all this "Real World/Jersey Shore" BS pettiness mixed with near-future sci-fi... it just ruins it. After seeing the two guys argue about the salt, I knew this one was a dud.

Yes, no way a psycho astronaut could get thru that screening. Oops! What about that murderous, diaper-wearing woman?

Yeah, I too am miffed at the "disgruntled astronaut" meme. We saw it in "Prometheus" also. A multi-billion dollar mission. But let's wing it and send in completely incompetent people who are asocial and uncommunicative. Oh, and for laughs, let's send in a handicapped person too.

However, since the entire movie was virtual reality I guess all these objections have to be tossed away. Since it's all some sort of reality show or game or competition and not an actual interstellar mission.
