To those saying you need a "BIG STAR" to Greenlight

Now, I've seen Ghost in the Shell and anyone who has watched the film would know it's about the IDEAS not the spectacle that makes the film amazing.

So does it need to cost 150 million?

How about you scale it down, and focus on just making a good film just like Deadpool which cost about 50 million.

Marketing?

You do know this is the anime that influenced the very popular Matrix film, so already people will be attracted to that connection.

Now the clue is in the title.

It's a JAPANESE anime-adaptation. Clue is in the title, folks. So you really think people would turn away seeing an Asian lead in a....oh my lawd...ASIAN-ANIME ADAPTATION?!

Let's be real here guys. This is about Hollywood not having any balls to put out original films like they used to. So they take a popular property they can market, put in their blonde friend as the lead and hope that it brings them good money because of brand recognition.

Horrible.

It's actually both not just one. This cliche of people trying to downplay spectacle and action in an action movie to say why it was good is very insulting. It takes great film making to make great action and the best action film makers (who are almost all from Hong Kong not Hollywood) are film masters.

Let's be honest, if Ghost in the Shell was just about robots talking about for 90 minutes and it had no spectacle or action no one would care. The spectacle, in this case referring to the high quality of animation, was a huge reason it got noticed. The fact that it told a serious story while having great action is a good thing and what made it also get attention.

As you pointed out, the first adaptation of Ghost in the Shell from 1995 was a big influence on the Matrix movies. Do you think it's a coincidence that the Matrix also had plenty of action and spectacle while at the same time pushing ideas?

So does it need to cost 150 million?

Depends on the story that is being told. Ghost in the Shell does not begin and end with the first adaptation from 1995. Ghost in the Shell is actually about Section 9 from Japan and the 1995 adaptation wasn't really about that which may mislead people into thinking Ghost in the Shell is something else.

Ghost in the Shell should be a film franchise. There are lots of stories to tell because Section 9 deals with so many different kinds of cases.

Not really. What this is about is white supremacy. It's not like there was ever an era in Hollywood where nonwhites were treated as equals with whites.

This movie has a very interesting premise; which I'd define a man versus machine.

Yes, the ideas that no common joe of the street would understand or would have difficulty understanding. You cant sell the film with the ideas since its not main stream, cyber punk has never been. Not only that but the philosophy of ghost in the shell, birth, death, humanity, AI evolution, cyberbrains, morality, and corruption all set in a futuristic setting again isnt a easy sell.
So does it need to cost 150 million?

Its probably going to cost way more than that, and yes, yes they need all that money to make it look good.

Than they wouldnt do the story justice. You cant scale down a film like this because it just wouldnt work. Deadpool was a success because they didnt need that much money to make it. It relied on its characters and simple story to get the point across. They didnt need to create a whole world out of nothing. You are comparing apples and oranges here, totally different.
Marketing?
You do know this is the anime that influenced the very popular Matrix film, so already people will be attracted to that connection.

You mean the 1999 film that many people have forgotten about. What are the producers going to put as the tag line? "The live action film that influenced the Matrix in someways but not like the Matrix at all." No they are going to need a pretty big marketing campaign. Why? Because no mater how much we might love Ghost its not popular in main stream. There is no way the production would be able to make a profit to just catering to the small percentage of fans.
Now the clue is in the title.

What are you talking about? How is the clue in the title? What is Japanese about the words ghost in the shell? Do you mean if they put the info "Based on the acclaimed Anime" underneath the title? Your common movie goer would probably turn away simply because they wouldnt recognize the leads or they might think its OMG subbed! God forbid people learn to read right.
Let's be real here guys. This is about Hollywood not having any balls to put out original films like they used to. So they take a popular property they can market, put in their blonde friend as the lead and hope that it brings them good money because of brand recognition.

Now this, we can agree upon. Hollywood is a machine. A money making machine. Thats its only goal, make tons of money for all the investors and producers and studios that put films together. They dont care about the fans, they dont care that a bunch of Anime nerds are going to pissed because they changed so much from the source. But than again that goes for almost any property that Hollywood gets there grubby little paws on. And we, as fans have two choices, go see the film for what it is, or dont see it. Simple as that. I love how everyone now a days are so entitled and feel like the world owes you everything, it dosent! Just cause you dont agree with something dosent mean its going to change. Speak with your money, you know the only language Hollywood understands.

Margot was/is nowhere near the same level as ScarJo in terms of bankability or fame, but she was/is very much riding the 'It Girl' wave. By the time she would've been offered "Ghost..." she already had "Focus" in the bag: a major studio (WB) movie as a co-lead with Will Smith. She was also asked to audition for the infamous flop "Fantastic 4" reboot, which of course Fox were hoping could blossom into a big franchise.

So no, she certainly wasn't - still isn't, really - a 'big' star in the same vein as Scarlett, it's not as if she was some random, unknown actress. "Ghost..." likely would've been her test to see if she could lead a big budget studio flick, like how Taylor Kitsch was cast in Disney's mega-flop "John Carter."

No, it doesn't need to be $150M but it would be the best option. The second best option is the Ex Machina route which costed around $15M. With the lowered cost, there is more freedom. However, the mid-range movies are fading away.

How about you scale it down, and focus on just making a good film just like Deadpool which cost about 50 million.

This is like saying everybody should win an Olympic gold medal or win the lottery. Just because it has been done once doesn't mean it's easy to do or even can be replicated.

Now the clue is in the title.

Exactly! How many live-action Animes even get made? Yes, the clue is in the title and it's saying uphill battle.

I would totally NOT SEE GitS WITH AN "ASIAN" actress. I would see it with a japanese or western one. When you say asian, you include chinese and korean and that is freaking blasphemy for GitS.
